3.5 rounded up. Enjoyed the writing and the first half was a solid four stars. The second half felt like stories I've already read about women deciding when/if/how to have children. ( )
I don't actually feel equipped to write a review of this book, but the top review here on GR does a great job. This is the first Japanese novel I've read. I enjoyed the voice: frank and conversational, yet reflective. It was a female perspective I don't often see in novels and really enjoyed. It took me a while to read it, probably because I gravitate towards books with more plot and this was much more "slice of life." As a woman and a mother I really appreciated many passages though. I'd recommend it! ( )

This quote, from one of this novel's characters, encapsulates the choppy, high simmering day-to-day life of Ms. Kawakami's hyper-urban Japan, in which sense of self (who am I? where am I going?) seems always naggingly elusive, and for women exponentially magnified.
How healthy can a culture be that makes the decision to become a mother so horrifyingly perilous?
Telling this story draws on raw and ragged emotion, but also requires dedicated artistry and fidelity. Ms. Kawakami supplies everything needed to tell it deeply, truthfully, and unforgettably. ( )
Kind of ruminative and round in circles, which I suppose is the point but can get a little wearing. Good bits of thinking felt insightful, flatter bits felt like a 101 philosophy seminar. Some genuinely funny (and gross) set pieces. Description particularly finally attuned to seasons and bodies, shivers and sweats and such. Found the Americanised translation a bit jarring, but fair enough. ( )
