Some interesting flashback scenes to a retconning of Nick Fury creating The Avengers in the late 50s with (largely) super villains, drawn by Howard Chaykin. ( ) This was pretty good. Very curious to find out what the "super serum" does to Mockingbird. Was also cool seeing the 60's Nick Fury assemble a "dark avengers", the first Avengers Initiative. Didn't care for the art much though on that part. Also loved when Luke Cage said his spidersenses were tingling and Spider-Man told him that phrase had a copyright. I liked the present-day story about the New Avengers and HAMMER. The New Avengers feel like they have a few too many people, so some characters get rather less page-time, and there's plenty of interactions that get little exploration. The Nick Fury story from 1959 was underwhelming, and not necessary to the plot. The characters (who were mostly new to me) were uncompelling, and drawn in too similar of a style. And the action was largely predictable. This story goes between the past (Fury setting up the original Avengers in 1959) and the present day where Luke Cage is trying to get a new team of Avengers settled in. Unfortunately H.A.M.M.E.R. is rebuilding and that is pushing the team back apart in some ways. I liked seeing how the past and the current story line were tied together and it's interesting to see the current team filling itself out and the people and things needed to get Avenger Mansion running again. I actually really liked the art style. However I thought I was picking up from a volume I had previously read and I am honestly not sure. This volume could definitely have used something to help me figure out where it belongs in continuity.
