I met DeMille at a local bookstore and got my copy of the Panther (and all my other John Corey's) signed and during his presentation and random chatter, he mentioned the Panther was a badder baddy (maybe not in those words) than the Lion. Sorry Nelson, no freaking way, the panther pales in comparison to the Lion, hands freaking down. But standing alone, the Panther is a formidable enemy, but in this book, isn't the CIA the bigger threat...hmmm... By now, if you've read the Corey series, you know if you like him or not, and this one sure doesn't disappoint!! DeMille's book The Panther, features ex-NYC policeman turned anti-terrorist task force agent John Corey, and his FBI wife Kate Mayfield, conned into being sent to Yemen as "bait" while tracking down a notorious terrorist nicknamed "The Panther". The book also features Paul Brenner, another Demille character from an earlier book, The General's Daughter, although the Paul Brenner in this book did not seem to have the same personality as the Paul Brenner from the earlier book. In this book, the hunter becomes the hunted, all Yemeni characters are untrustworthy and evil, the bureaucratic FBI / CIA agents aren't much better, and predator drones and hellfire missiles fill the skies. And like the Bruce Willis character in the Die Hard movies, or the Spencer character in Lee Child's books, in which the detectives seem to need to be irreverent, disrespectful of authority, and smart-asses, John Corey is cast in that same mold. But I thought DeMille went way overboard in making John Corey such a smart-ass that he became obnoxious. Corey's constant smart-aleck thoughts and comments, to each and every event and person throughout the book, stopped being funny, and rather became a distraction. To me, he quickly became an unlikable character, and when you no longer like the main character in the book, the book itself becomes unlikable. The book is long enough at over 600 pages, and could have been shortened by one-third, and made a lot more enjoyable, by eliminating every-other unnecessary Corey thought and comment. Ex-NYC cop John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, are sent to Yemen to smoke out the Panther, an American-born Yemeni and Al Qaeda leader responsible for the attack on the USS Cole. As in the previous five novels, John's running wise crack and running commentary are the backbone of this series so if you like them, you'll like the books. Not to give too much away, but the good guys kill the bad guys, despite some treachery. The editors could have done better -- it was at least 100 pages longer than necessary. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
