"Cancer Clinical Trials" is a comprehensive, no-nonsense, and readable guide for anyone who is considering therapeutic options in addition to standard cancer therapy. The book seeks to share knowledge about cancer clinical trials with people living with cancer, their families and loved ones. It will help readers decide if a clinical trial is a good option for them, to choose an appropriate trial, and to navigate through the clinical trial process. It includes lists of questions to ask, things to look for, things to watch out for, and places to look for information. The book begins with a discussion of what cancer is and the many ways in which it is treated - including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and new strategies now in use or that will be available in the near future. It considers all aspects of clinical trials, including how they are designed, how to find and evaluate them, how to become a participant, and details of what they will involve in terms of time and commitment. A chapter on available drugs now used to treat cancer will be especially helpful.… (lisätietoja)

As a married mom of four, i myself have never had cancer, however, my grandparents died of different forms of cancer and my mother has battled breast cancer, my aunt has battled breast cancer twice and my father-in-law fought and lost his battle with stage 4 colon cancer. After reading this book, i sat and wondered if any of my friends or family would have benefited from any of this information. It really makes you wonder, it also makes you wonder if you were to ever have cancer, would you actually be willing to subject yourself to any of these. I recommend this book for any one who has or is a caregiver for someone with cancer.

This book is a basic description of clinical trials, geared toward potential cancer patients interested in participating in clinical trials.

The simple yet non-trivial explanation of clinical trials - their aims, protocols and potential benefits and harms - I believe can be very useful for cancer patients and their relatives in shaping a notion concerning a possible participation in trials. It can also be used for the general public just to get a grip on what these trials actually are and how they are conducted. To me it seems a rather well-written book. ( )

Drs. Beer and Axmaker have written a helpful resource for people who need more information than a brochure, but less than a textbook, about clinical trials. It's concise in its delivery while providing a comprehensive overview of the clinical trials process. It is well-organized with clear explanations.

It's main shortcoming is that the information on potential financial concerns only speak to issues that affect the insured. The guide fails to acknowledge that some patients do not have health insurance, or offer suggestions for them. ( )

This is a must read for anyone that has cancer or has someone special in their life with cancer. Even if you have not considered experimental treatment yet, it may be considered at some point and early education is always of benefit. I respect that the authors are promoting experimental cancer and, I believe, they do their best to balance the potential benefits with the risks. In addition, I appreciated the debunking of many popular misconceptions. ( )

With a good friend recently diagnosed with cancer, I think it worked out perfectly that I had recieved this book through a Library Thing Giveaway prior to my friend being diagnosed. As soon as the diagnosis was made I went through and re-read the book and while he is currently going through chemotherapy and the nauseas & weight loss etc associated with that, I love the fact that when he is ready to talk I will have some insight as to the experimental therapy side of treatment.
Anyone who has or knows someone who has been diagnosed with cancer should definitely take the time to read through this book. It allows us to be supportive and knowledgeable when discussing treatment and/or simply understanding the process of clinical trials and experimental treatment that our loved ones may or can be part of to aide in their recovery ( )
