The beloved author of A Wrinkle in Time takes an introspective look at her life and muses on creativity in this memoir, the first of her Crosswicks Journals. Every so often I need OUT. . . . My special place is a small brook in a green glade, a circle of quiet from which there is no visible sign of human beings. . . . I sit there, dangling my legs and looking through the foliage at the sky reflected in the water, and things slowly come back into perspective.   Set against the lush backdrop of Crosswicks, her family's farmhouse in rural Connecticut, this deeply personal memoir details Madeleine L'Engle's journey to find balance between her career as a Newbery Medal-winning author and her responsibilities as a wife, mother, teacher, and Christian.   As she considers the roles that creativity, family, citizenship, and faith play in her life, L'Engle reveals the complexities behind the author whose works--honored with the National Book Award, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and countless other prizes--have long been cherished by children and adults alike. Written in simple, profound, and often humorous prose, A Circle of Quiet is an insightful woman's elegant search for the meaning and purpose of her life.   This ebook features an illustrated biography of Madeleine L'Engle including rare images from the author's estate.  … (lisätietoja)

I read this book during a unique and isolated time of my life, and it has since always reminded me of the place where I read it. This is the first of L'Engle's non-fiction books that I'd read, though I soon followed it up with every one I could find. ( )

A terrific, deeply insightful commentary on writing and life. I laughed in some parts and nodded in many others. Madeleine L'Engle is my kind of Christian. ( )

I read this journal-like memoir in short bits over a period of a few weeks instead of reading it in large chunks and finishing it in a few hours or days. So maybe for that reason it had an authentic conversational feel to it, as if I was having a series of chats with an author/wife/mother/friend who had a lot of opinions and thoughts about failure, success, writing, faith, relationships, family, and life in a small town as well as living in New York City. I didn't agree with everything L'Engle declared as fact, nor did she explain everything as clearly as I would have liked. But her writing style was honest, and it was intriguing to grasp the sense of a real person, with a multitude of layers and complexity of thoughts and feelings. ( )

Most people are familiar with Madeleine L'Engle's
children's series beginning with "Wrinkle in
Time" and "Meet the Austins". Not quite as well
known are her writings for adults. These include
a set of three journals and books of poetry. "A
Circle of Quiet" is the first of three published
journals. The book is a collection of her
thoughts and musings on a variety of subjects and
life experiences including what it's like to be a
struggling unpublished writer for many years,
raising children well, balancing being a writer
and being mother, living in the country and
living in New York City, teaching college
seminars, what's important in a marriage, dealing
with difficult people, running a general store,
what is good in literature, accidentally becoming
a Cathedral librarian, the value of the written
word, how science and the concept of mystery
opened her heart to God's truth in a way that
apologetics could never touch. Interwoven in her
writings is a sense of God's working both in her
life and the world at large. Sometimes this is
stated directly. Other times not. The subjects
she broaches in her writings are multitude. The
above list is only a sampling. Written in an
engaging, charming, thoughtful style, this book is a pure delight to read.
