Fiction. Historical Fiction. When Travis returns home from Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother's stolen his girlfriend and car, and the nightmares of his best friend getting killed keep him completely spooked. But when he runs into Harper, a girl who despises him for rumors Travis started back in middle school, life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he falls deeper in love with her and begins to find his way through the family meltdown, the post-traumatic stress and the possibility of a interesting future. His sense of humor, sense of his own strength and incredible sense of honor make Travis an irresistible and eminently loveable hero in this fantastic and timely debut novel.… (lisätietoja)

Really enjoyed this brief look at a young man coming home from a year of war. It kind of brought to the front how changed he felt and how different he was from who he had been before and from his friends who stayed behind. He made dumb decisions and treated his family inconsistently. All of that seemed realistic to me. I liked that he learned to stand up for his mom. I did think that more could have been put into his relationship with Harper. That seemed to happen a bit too simply and easily. Still I enjoyed it.

This book is an award nominee for the 2014-2015 Gateway award here in Missouri. (An award given by the Missouri Association of School Librarians). I'm trying to read a bunch of them this year. If your child is wanting to read this one be award that it does have sex in it although it is not really graphic. ( )

This is my second time reading this, and it's...a lot less profound now that I'm an adult. I wasn't the intended audience for it, I'm fully aware. This book was written to give hope and representation to a group that probably feel like they have none and who I imagine are irritated at all the hero-worship in the US, yet experience how poorly veteran's centers and causes are funded. The author did a lot of research to write this book well, and succeeded. The writing is vivid and realistic, and it's quite like being in the mind of a nineteen-year-old kid, indeed. The PTSD sections are treated with sensitivity and parental worries are never there for drama. I liked how everyone had different reasons for joining the military, and no one was seen as better than anyone for their reason. Charlie's mom and her partner were wonderful, and I remember being stunned that they were even in there, when I first read this. I was delighted. Gay couples didn't have representation, then, that is more common now.

This book has a serious madonna-whore complex. I was unhappy every time I had to read even half a sentence of it. Thanks for shaming girls with big boobs, author, especially if they can't afford the thousands of dollars in reduction surgery they'll need depending on procedure. Don't "nineteen-year-old soldier" at me. Aaaannnd of course the girls are all trailer trash and promiscuous. The "ugly" girl is only hot when Travis decides she is, and suddenly she's perfect and angelic and innocent, but can still go out with the guys to go shark fishing and beer drinking. He contrasts Harper -constantly- with Paige, and I was frustrated. His brother Ryan is an enormous asshole. Paige is blamed for dating Ryan when Travis is away, and Travis hates them both, but--he keeps saying throughout the whole book that with Paige, it was just sex. "Girlfriend" seemed little more than a formality. He never liked her, just her body, according to him, yet he's one of those guys who clearly thinks having sex with someone means you own them.

A note on boyfriend or girlfriend stealing: it takes two, people. Your friend or sibling or whoever can come onto your date, but your date has to say yes in order for the stealing to occur. Blame both of them, not just one.

Harper is forgiving Because The Plot Says So. Travis spread nasty rumors about her that still affect how people view her to this day, and she winds up dating him and they blush and it's supposed to be sweet. It would have been sweet had he never spread the rumors! Both of them bring it up a lot. Why does she keep hitting him? It's not affectionate. It's weird. But the sea turtle scene was cute. Both times I read this, it was my favorite part of the book. I hated Travis' dad, and definitely viewed his parent's marriage through a specific lens. I'm glad the mom had the resolution she did, though. ( )

I got side-tracked while reading somewhere in the middle of the book by [b:Keeper of the Lost Cities|12842828|Keeper of the Lost Cities (Keeper of the Lost Cities, #1)|Shannon Messenger|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1326469854s/12842828.jpg|17993650] (loved it, cross my heart you'd enjoy it too). Which -I'm pretty sure- I needed.

The thing is, I hate war and death and all the horror we humans are capable of. I guess reading about it makes me remind myself of all our gory glory.

It feels wrong to say I enjoyed myself. And I didn't exactly enjoy it.
I liked the way it's written. I'm glad I read this book. ( )

THIS BOOK.
OH MY GOD..
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN MY WHOLE LIFE?
I WANT MY OWN TRAVIS.RIGHT.NOW.

It's been an amazing experience to be with Travis. Painful (the good kind of pain), heart-breaking, hilarious, a little bit hot... okay very hot.. and I just want to go look for him and bang hug him so tight.

I'm really at loss for words to explain why this book was so good and so overwhelming. I'm afraid my review will be just me talking gibberish and making a fool out of myself.

I'll try anyway.

New adult romance, Post traumatic stress, Marines, forgiveness

Travis returns home for a break after his year in Afghanistan where his best friend died, having nightmares and PSD. His parents are having issues, his brother is dating his ex-girlfriend, and he keeps seeing Charlie, his dead buddy, everywhere. When he sees Harper, a girl whose reputation he ruined in middle school, he realizes that he’d like her forgiveness.

This is such a well written story, Harper and Travis feel and sound so real. I bought this on my Kindle when it was featured on DailyCheapReads.com. It has since gone up in price, but is worth the regular price. I will look for more of Ms. Doller’s work in the future. I like the new genre that has sprung up—college kids rather than high school or full adults.

There are amazing descriptions that make beautiful word pictures: “stars freckle the night sky,”
“she lowers the volume from highway to city,”
“This uniform might impress girls, but it’s uncomfortable. Especially compared to my cammies, which were sandblasted to a salty faded softness.”
“I’m seriously hungry. Concave hungry.”
