A Warder Series Novella Marcus Roth is a top criminal lawyer by day and demon-slaying warder by night, but he is simply one of five warders--not really important to anyone but Joseph Locke, his hearth. Or so Marcus mistakenly believes. On a trip to Lexington, Kentucky, to celebrate Joe's grandfather's birthday, that belief changes as Marcus unwittingly uncovers a paranormal dilemma and ends up revealing his identity as a warder to Joe's family. Faced with a traitor, demons, and the return of an old enemy, Marcus must put his own needs aside to save his friends--though in so doing he may lose the man he loves forever. Even living through the ordeal might not be enough if Marcus can't forgive himself and learn that his hearth and the rest of his clutch can't do without him. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

Marcus is the warder who tells this story, and he was the most surprising one for me so far. My image of him was that the other warders had of him, since that was the only point of view I’d seen until low. Marcus turns out to be one of those ‘still waters who run deep’. There is a level of emotion and a depth to him I didn’t suspect, and only emerges gradually. As if he opened up to the scrutiny that comes with telling a story only reluctantly.
Joe is an amazing guy, but the degree of his extraordinary personality only emerges gradually. It was great to watch him through Marcus’s eyes and to see how Marcus totally accepts him, loves him with everything he is. Joe has fought hard to be where he is, and has not let the fact that he’s blind stop him one bit. He is the one, as is so often the case with those perceived as disabled, who helps others deal with his blindness. After all, he is used to it; it’s everyone else who has to learn how to deal.
This is a tough book to read in places. The story is one of deceit and treachery, there is some tough fighting of demons, and the obstacles both Joe and Marcus have to overcome as their love is tested are formidable. I loved every minute of this emotional roller coaster and would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal stories and thinks they can stand the tension. It is a great tale of true love and devotion and has the hot sex between the main characters to prove it.
