At first, I had time getting into Surrender because I was expecting the story to be told from the perspectives of Jag and Vi, as it was in Posession. Once I was able to move past my initial disappointment, I remembered why I liked Elana Johnson’s writing so much and I am truly looking forward to reading the next installment in this series.

Surrender is told from the perspective of a male & a female, just like Possession, but this time we are introduced to two completely new characters—Gunner & Raine. I am not attached to any of the characters in the story and I don’t relate to any of them, but I just love the plot!

Since Gunner & Raine are both “Insiders” and are involved in the world of the oppressive government, we learn much more about the world Elana Johnson has created. Everything is so much more intricate and entangled then we ever would have thought from reading Possession. I learned a lot more about Zenn and Thane Myers and I think they are two of the most interesting characters that I’ve met in Johnson’s world.

Surrender unveils the complexity of the world that Johnson has created and I really enjoyed learning more about it. There is plenty of political intrigue, scheming, and manipulating to keep the plot moving. There is also a decent amount of romance. While the romance did not shine for me, it does add another layer to the novel that needs to be there. All in all, Surrender is a fantastic read and I can’t wait to continue on with the series. ( )

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick and Dirty: A girl and guy join the rebels to try to overthrow Freedom. If you didn’t like Possession (*me*) you should definitely give Surrender a chance; it’s unbelievably better!!

Opening Sentence: Someone is always watching.

The Review:

So I was a tad leery of reading Surrender after reading Possession. The plot was great, I admit, but the writing overall was hard to follow and the characters bugged me (namely, Jag). But once I started Surrender, I could not put it down! This book is from the points of views of Gunner Jameson — a teen who has voice control and has lived in Freedom his whole life — and Raine Hightower — the daughter of the Director of Freedom with a very special (and very taxing) power. Gunner has been crushing on the Director’s daughter for a really long time. Raine has been watching Gunner ever since that fateful night eight months ago when Violet Schoenfeld became her roommate. Raine goes behind her father’s back and is a member of the Insiders — a group of Freedom citizens that want to start a rebellion against Thinkers (leaders of the society with special powers). This is a really creative world where you have the choices of being brainwashed into a Thinker or be a Thinker and control. Intrigue and romance collide in this fast-paced novel.

So let me just put this out there: this is not like Possession (writing wise). Everything was understandable and was thoroughly explained (and not just randomly added for convenience). I can tell that Johnson is growing as a writer, not only in her writing but also in her characters. Raine and Gunner are completely opposite characters from Vi and Jag. Raine has always been a good girl and only rebels in small ways (unlike Vi who does whatever whenever). Gunner is reserved, but still has emotions (unlike hormonal Jag). Their relationship had reasons behind the love and slowly grew over time. It was great to see more of their complex personalities before they admit they like each other.

So for all those Possession fans, yes, there is still Vi and Jag and Zenn. Zenn actually plays a key role in this book. I found myself actually liking him more (and rooting for Zenn over Jag), seeing his raw love for Vi. We get an inside look on Zenn’s life as an Informer — how he plays both sides and his internal conflict with Jag. Jag — although a major character in Possession and is still talked about throughout Surrender, Jag doesn’t appear until the end of the book. Vi is constantly in the background, but comes forward as the story progresses.

Although the writing is soooo much better than Possession, there are a few transitions that are a bit murky. (WARNING: SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T READ POSSESSION!!) Vi’s unbrainwashing, for example, is never said outright, making the story a bit confusing (one minute she remembers, the next she’s ignorant without any explanations or nudges to the right inference). But other than that, the twists and overall plotting are smooth and realistic (i.e. character’s reactions or reasons behind reactions).

One of the major plot twists was building from the first book. I loved how it’s been building to this twist, but I thought it could’ve been a little more hidden or read between the lines. I was expecting it, but was still questioning my thoughts until it actually happened.

The beginning was slow-ish, but once you get to page 100 or so, it rushes off, leaving you hanging on for dear life (or hanging on each page). Once the story reaches the scene below, it’s the turning point from who-are-these-characters to I-ABSOLUTELY-LOVE-THEM! Just a warning before you go buy the book: Johnson knows how to make a cliffhanger. You think Percy Jackson or Divergent was bad? Wait till you read this.

Notable Scene:

In Vi’s drain, I smelled oily smoke and wet cement. I tasted the triumph as it mixed with fury.

I saw what would happen if Vi gained her freedom. I saw Thane weeping into his hands. I saw the sky flashing with fire, the wind howling with my father’s screams.

I saw Freedom fall.

And standing next to Vi, watching it all from a hoverboard, I saw myself.

Someone flew up behind me, and I turned at his touch. He kissed me, and we surveyed the chaos with our fingers entwined.

“About time, Gunner,” Vi said, her voice a mix of sarcasm and power.

That’s when I started screaming, both in the vision and in real life.

Later, I got an official e-comm with Thane’s name decorating the letterhead. I could never tell anyone about what I’d seen during the drain. Not Vi. Not Cannon.

And especially not my dad.

That was eight months ago, and I’d been watching Gunner Jameson ever since.

FTC Advisory: Simon Pulse provided me with a copy of Surrender. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. ( )

This is the follow up to Elana Johnsons's Possession. And it was just like Possession in the sense that it was confusing at times to keep up with what was going on and things didn't always flow together nicely. But there was enough interest in the book (like #1) that kept me reading. Maybe it was the characters, maybe the plot, I'm not sure but in the end I finished it anticipating the knowledge of what's happening and now awaiting book 3.

Surrender is told though the narrative of different characters for each chapter. It was interesting to see book 2 done like this. We're reintroduced to some old characters but are also introduced to new characters, new characters like Raine, who similar to Vi is a strong independent young lady who is willing to stick up for herself and what she believes is right. If you liked Vi in Possession than you wont be disappointed with Raine. Gunner is another character that we meet and he plays a crutial role in Surrender. He's flagged and because of this, his life as he knew it is instantly turned upside down. He's a strong willed and stubborn guy and adds to the story. We still get to follow Vi, Jag and Zenn so don't worry - our favourite love triangle is still hanging on but with some difficulty (You'll find out when you read this book - remember the cliffhanger at the end of book 1?)

Overall, Surrender was a good read especially if you read and enjoyed Possession. I just think that Elana Johnson has a different way of writing and it obviously works for her, her books have sold like hotcakes. I can't wait for book 3! ( )

After reading Possession, I was pumped for the sequel. I really thought Possession was one of the best YA dystopian books I read last year, even though it seems like that book never really got the love it deserved (in my opinion). As soon as I heard about the sequel I got it on my Goodreads, and eagerly awaited its release. And for some reason, it seems like Surrender didn't get much love either. Regardless, I was stoked.

Surrender is more for a companion to Possession than a direct sequel. This time, the story is told through the rotating point of view of Raine and Gunner. Raine, Vi's roommate and a long-time law abiding member of the city of Freedom, is not the same after she meets Gunner. Despite all of the foreboding clouds surrounding Gunner, Raine finds herself drawn to him. While dealing with her feeling for Gunner, Raine finds that there's more to her severely brainwashed roommate Vi than meets the eye -something that would change Raine's world forever.

Something about Surrender just didn't capture me as much as Possession. The writing didn't feel as tight, the thought process behind it didn't seem as deep or interesting, and the overall story wasn't quite as compelling (though it was still very interesting). Surrender was not as strong as Possession to me -but after I read in the afterword that Johnson had written and edited the book in just four months (as opposed to who knows how long for Possession) I had to cut her a little slack.

Now don't get me wrong.- Surrender is still a very enjoyable novel and pretty darn gripping. It was great to see more of the world in Surrender than we got to see in Possession and for the opportunity to get to know some other characters, who were also really fascinating in their own way. And even with my small disappoints, Surrender still kept me flipping pages (though I could have done without the occasion gimmicky writing a-la-Shatter-Me and the strong romance plot line).

Even though it's not as good as Possession, Surrender is a solid teen dystopian novel that's worth the read. ( )

Insider’s: a rebel group with the Resistance who fight against the government of Thinker’s.
Thinker’s: The government leader’s who believe people should be mind controlled into making the “right decisions”.
When I heard there wasn’t going to be a ‘sequel’ to Possession, I was freaking DEVASTATED. Jag and Vi completely STOLE my heart and then Elana Johnson TORE it out! No worries… they’re TOTALLY in Surrender, but I shall give nothing away about them! You’ll have to read it to see what happens!!
Surrender is told in alternating POV’S, in alternating chapters by Gunner and Raine… and you’re going to fall in love with their story too. I know right?
Gunner loves Raine, (Vi’s *roomate*) Director Hightower’s daughter. Raine wants Gunner to join the Insider’s (a group rebelling against the government) but Gunner refuses until the Director decides he wants him to join HIS ranks among the “powerful” and *cough*cough* anything but FREE higher up’s of Freedom’s Association.
Gunner and Raine are NOT supposed to love one another, they both have their designated ‘match’. Yet… each can’t help but fall for the other!
Gunner goes undercover for the Insider’s and ends up with ZENN as his roommate! They break into Thorne’s office to gather information and find a bunch of files on Vi, Raine and *cue the heavenly choir song* … JAG BARQUE!!!!
“Okay, so my genetic ability to control tech was as freaky as Zenn talking to thin air. Whatever.”
Someone has been “helping” Gunn along the way… but he can’t figure out WHO. He decides to risk it all on a whim, and get Jag out all by himself.
“I had one easy thing to accomplish before I left Freedom. Hug my mom.
But I also had one very hard thing: Rescue Jag Barque.”
SQUEE!!! Surrender is filled with awesome! We are privileged with so much more back history than we had in Possession, and I LOVED IT!! It was surprisingly easy to submerge myself back into Elana Johnson’s world of Freedom, Thinker’s, government conspiracies and tragic love.
Fast paced and genuine, Surrender will keep you flipping pages until the wee hours of the morning! ( )
