A sharply observed, 24-hour urban love story that follows Stephen Connolly - a character from the bestselling novel The Children - through one of the worst days of his life. The day he has decided to dump his girlfriend. On a stiflingly hot December day, Stephen has decided it's time to break up with his girlfriend Fiona. He's 39, aimless and unfulfilled, he's without a clue working out how to make his life better. All he has are his instincts - and unfortunately they might just be his downfall . As he makes his way through the pitiless city and the hours of a single day, Stephen must fend off his demanding family, endure another shift of his dead-end job at the zoo (including an excruciating teambuilding event), face up to Fiona's aggressive ex-husband and the hysteria of a children's birthday party that goes terribly wrong. As an ordinary day develops into an existential crisis, Stephen begins to understand - perhaps too late - that love is not a trap, and only he can free himself. Hilarious, tender and heartbreaking, Animal People is a portrait of urban life, a meditation on the conflicted nature of human-animal relationships, and a masterpiece of storytelling. Animal People invites readers to question the way we think about animals ? what makes an 'animal person' What value do we, as a society, place on the lives of creatures? Do we brutalise our pets even as we love them? What's wrong with anthropomorphism anyway? Filled with challenging ideas and shocks of recognition and revelation, Animal People shows a writer of great depth and compassion at work.… (lisätietoja)

4.75 Stars. Animal People is the literary art form at close to its best. All its components are unassuming in isolation. Even its lead Stephen would prefer to be so… or at least his feelings of social anxiety lead him to think that way. Everything from his morning routine, his observations, actions and human interactions (when he cannot avoid them) at first seem so commonplace. And the prose itself so spare.

But with intelligent use of motif and recurring symbolism, Wood quietly develops her characters, thematic resonance and ultimately nailbiting suspense. Continue reading review at http://bookloverbookreviews.com/2019/06/animal-people-by-charlotte-wood-review-q... ( )

Wonderful! Stephen had me at the first uncomfortable encounter with his neighbour's dog and I could not put this down until the end. Beautifully written as always, by one of my favourite authors. ( )

As suggested by the title, this book not only reflects on people's need and love of animals but also the animal nature of people. From the cover:
'Animal People traces a watershed day in the life of Stephen, aimless unhappy and unfulfilled--- and without a clue as to how to make his life better.
His dead-end job at the zoo, his demanding family, his oppressive feelings for Fiona and the pitless city itself...the great weight of it all threatens to come crashing down on him.The day will bring untold surprises and disasters, but will also show him---perhaps too late---that love is not a trap, and only he can free himself.'
This is not a feel good tale, but one that takes a grippingly honest look at every day life for some people. It is very credible and the characters are recognisable.
I will seek out the author's earlier book 'The Children' as Stephen is a character from those pages. ( )

I found this a rather strange novel. It's my first Charlotte Wood book, although she's been almost on my "to read" list for a long time. Something about the reviews of her early work made me interested but not enthusiastic enough to commit to actually reading. Then I read a positive review of this book and the fact that it was available in my local library made it easy to decide to give it a try. Well, I tried, and there were aspects of the book that I liked. It's set in the place where I live and so the context was comfortably familiar. There are quirky characters, some not unlike the ones I encounter. I enjoyed her somewhat cynical view of people and relationships. Marriage is definitely not set on a pedestal. I found, however, that some of the scenes were just too fanciful, with characters that were too much just caricatures rather than real three-dimensional people. I think Wood was trying too hard to make the reader laugh, at the expense of producing credible people with real-world issues.
I plan to read another of her books though (perhaps "The Submerged Cathedral"), to see if the aspects Wood's writing which I did like are more evident. ( )
