A story about a little girl who lives in a rural area, that becomes intrigued about the sounds and footprints that are coming from her backyard...wild turkeys. She follows and discovers many fun facts about these neat birds. I would use this book for a unit on different animal tracks. I would focus on the animals that come around during the season of fall ( to align with the book better). It would allow for great discoveries and explorations to happen. I picked this book the first time, but my kids asked to read it again. They liked the descriptions of turkey behavior and the amusing illustrations of those silly turkeys. Additionally, they love books about nature and this book does a great job of describing how these birds adapt to the changing seasons. I thought the premise was interesting and accessible to kids. Jenny's narration of the birds and the great illustrations made it an appealing book to read. I wasn't surprised that they liked it, they usually like books about nature, but I wasn't expecting how funny they found the turkeys and Jenny's descriptions. Pros: Dynamic illustrations, a clever narration concept, and additional resources at the end make this an enjoyable read - and offers a topic kids can get interested in. There's more to our review. One thing I liked while reading was the writing. The author used rhyme in her book and it kept the book very interesting and upbeat. The writing was also very engaging and paced well. There were not too many words on one page and I feel that it can allow readers to do more of the thinking and exploring. “Turkeys! A flock of birds with big strong feet. Turkeys look for seeds to eat,” is an example of the writing throughout this story. I also liked the pictures throughout the story as well. Each picture depicted the mood on each page and fits the style of the text. For example, “On rainy days I have to dash. Turkeys dart through puddles. Splash!” The picture depicted and imitated exactly what the author was saying. The pictures are wonderful visuals with great colors and eye-catching pictures. The big idea of this story is to read and learn how a turkey develops, grows, and lives throughout the year and making connections.
Not just for Thanksgiving, this should be a welcome addition to nature shelves all year round. (Informational picture book. 4-7)
