I'm not a big fan of the "small town characters and everything ties up in a nice neat bow at the end" books typically. But for some reason, this one held my attention at this particular time. There was nothing spectacular about it, and the writing definitely was not great, but it fit the bill for a short, light-hearted read in between some long heavy ones (Moby Dick and Jane Eyre, to be exact). There's not a single word wasted in this story about reclusive Mary McAllister and how her life intertwined with the people of Mill River. I liked the way Mary’s life story, including the cause of her social anxiety, alternated with chapters about the present day townspeople, many with their own vulnerabilities and peculiarities. This book is a little bit suspenseful, pleasantly romantic but just a tad too sweet and superficial for my taste. Lovely book about life in a small town... including a priest who steals spoons, a recluse with dark secrets, an arsonist and a teacher finding love for the first time. Vaguely reminiscent of the Mitford series by Jan Karon. This really was a good book. Please give this book a chance, despite the negative reviews. I gave it 4 stars as it was slow to start and jumped around some but overall, the story was good. I liked the characters and loved the emphasis on being kind to one another and loving people for who they are. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

Disfigured by the blow of an abusive husband, the widow Mary McAllister has spent almost sixty years secluded in a white marble mansion overlooking the town of Mill River, Vermont. Her links to the outside world are few: the mail, an elderly priest, and a bedroom window with a view of the town below. Most longtime residents of Mill River consider the marble house and its occupant peculiar, and few of them have ever seen Mary. But three newcomers, a police officer and his daughter and a new schoolteacher, are curious about the reclusive old woman. Only the town priest truly knows the Mill River recluse, and the secret she keeps ...a secret that, once revealed, will change the town, and the lives of its residents, forever.
