It was a roller coaster of emotion. ( ![]() Really good (but not quite great) writing; a reminder that we are not promised anything in life, but that we must make all that we can of what we have at the moment. Definitely worth reading. Not bad, but not great. It's definitely a book written for teenage girls by an adult male writing in the voice of a teenage girl. The dialogue is almost too witty at times, and the pacing feels a bit odd, with big reveals happening earlier than usual and a drawn-out ending. Deeper thought or two: the protagonist's comparatively shallow outlook on life, even in the face of her illness, seems to me to be the true tragedy of the story. It's somewhat sobering to see what's effectively a pagan view of death and grief. She's certainly examined her life, but I wonder what the book would be like if she'd come to a different conclusion. Anyway ... all that being said, overall it's a pleasant story and a light, easy read. It was pretty good, nothing super crazy, though. Cute and sad, but I didn't like the writing style sometimes. Certain parts were a little boring, too. i like the part where they died
Allison Hunter Hill (VOYA, April 2012 (Vol. 35, No. 1)) Hazel Grace is a sixteen-year-old cancer patient, caught up in the effort it takes to live in a body that everyone knows is running out of time. When she reluctantly agrees to return to her local teen cancer support group to satisfy her mother, the last thing she expects is an encounter with destiny. New to the group, Augustus Waters is handsome, bitingly sarcastic, and in remission. He is also immediately taken with Hazel, and what begins as a casual friendship soon escalates into a full romance. Through an impressive exchange of books and words, philosophies and metaphors, Hazel and Augustus tear apart what it means to be both star-crossed lovers and imminently mortal. While Hazel fixates about how her death will eventually hurt her loved ones, Augustus obsesses about how he will be remembered; the two are drawn together by the justified anxiety they feel over endings. grades 10 to Ages 15 to 18.
