When the Library of Alexandria was destroyed by arsonists, the Master Librarian rescued a backpack full of rare, magical books, and a clutter of highly evolved cats. From the beginning, these literate cats became vital assets in protecting the priceless collection of books. To this day, these noble Guardian Cats continue to maintain this trust, each having passed their positions to worthy successors. Cicero is the current Guardian of one of these books, the Book of Motion, hidden in a chamber deep beneath a sleepy, small town library. The Book, endowed with a supernatural lifeforce, is just the kind of artifact that becomes a magnet for megalomaniacs. When the story opens, Cicero, the elder guardian is training Marco, his young prot g about the ways of men. An avid reader and beloved library cat with a room of his own, Cicero often quotes wise men about the dangers of power. "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power," he tells Marco. Cicero's old archenemy, a dark Magician who would sell his soul to obtain the Book, reappears, along with his shadowy companions, the Whisperers. He calls himself Professor Chin, but he is no teacher. He believes he is destined to create a new world order. He is convinced that the Book of Motion is like Hitler's Spear of Destiny, a tool he must possess to achieve his mission and will stop at nothing to make the Book his own. The elder Cicero and young Marco, unlikely feline protagonists in the battle against evil, confront their formidable human foe with courage, cleverness, and the ultimate sacrifice.… (lisätietoja)

For those who love cats and books, this is an endearing story with some characters and ideals that will stay with you after it ends. ( )

Marco is a cat. And one day Marco discovers he can read. After a devastating change to his home circumstances he leaves, finding his way to the Angel Springs library and meeting Cicero and the rest of the Dead Cats Society. The world Cicero introduces him to leads him to his destiny, but not until after he experiences ancient history through the wonder of time portals and learns enough magic to fight off an evil villain.

There are stories within stories in this book, and I got a wee bit confused about where an early snapshot fitted into the otherwise excellent narrative. Then the whole tale came together into a rocketing roller-coaster of a read that I could no longer put down. I loved the images of Alexandria, so vivid I could almost smell the gardens. An excellent concept and one that I'm sure will be enjoyed by kids of all ages who love books. Liking cats is entirely optional, but you need to be open to sentience in animals.

Looking forward to the next book. ( )

Guardian Cats is the classic hero's journey with cats as the guardians of an ancient mystical book of power.

Although the main characters are two felines with a noble purpose, there is no shortage of creatures with dubious intents - gangster raccoons, an undead Queen, a hellhound, and an evil professor who believes possessing the mystical book would give him unlimited power, like Hitler's 'spear of destiny.

Like Warrior Cats, Marco's story begins as a housecat. Unlike Firepaw, however, Marco is perfectly happy in the lap of the girl who reads aloud to him every night. When he is gifted with the ability to decipher the words, he loses himself in the adventure stories he reads, dreaming of being a hero.

However, a tragic turn of events leaves him homeless and ill-prepared to face life on the streets. He eventually takes refuge in the public library but is soon discovered by Cicero, the old library cat and elder Guardian of the hidden Book of Motion. Cicero challenges Marco to leave his safe adventure stories and follow him on a true journey.

----------------------

Fans of the mythological hero's journey will recognize and enjoy the classic structure.

Fans of Warrior Cats will find a new feline world to explore, one created from an ancient brotherhood, with cats who read and hang in libraries.

Fans of magical realism will enjoy this allegorical fantasy adventure that can be enjoyed on several levels and all ages, nine and up. ( )
