Volume 2, The Holocaust: Selected Documents in Eighteen Volumes. Although it fluctuated in intensity, one of the most consistently pursued policies of the Nazi regime in Germany was the persecution of the Jews. The Nazis exhibited a paradoxical penchant for legality and endeavored to legalize the Holocaust by passing many laws placing disabilities and restrictions on Jews. Legalizing the persecutions made the eventual extermination of millions of Jews possible, because it made mass murder less criminal in the eyes of the murderers, and made the Jews more vulnerable. The documents selected for this volume pertain to laws and directives imposing the wearing of the Star of David on German Jews, as well as severe punishment for "racial pollution." Other documents deal with the extension of legalized discrimination to countries newly occupied by the Nazis. Contains 22 documents of source materials, carefully chosen from the thousands preserved at the U.S. National Archives. A detailed table of contents lists and provides the source for each document.
