oggettivamente la novella è carina e acquista molti punti alla fine che non è scontata, però a me l'intera faccenda non mi ha coinvolto molto. ( )

well.
i love bones, i love his character development, his strength, his loyalty, his ruthlessness, his wit, his cold intelligence, his slyness and his determination; but most of all his vulnerability, the pity and compassion and weakness he so hard tries to hide. and well, his English accent as well.
(hey, everyone has their guilty pleasures)
so it was interesting to take a look at how he was before cat, and, even though i did like this short story, i have to confess that i'm also lowkey disappointed.
he's not the guy we're used to see: he's imprecise, maybe even careless, not the relentless manipulator who was always one step ahead of everyone: he makes mistakes, he almost succumbs in the final battle, he's sloppy and he appears as the merciless bastard he's always described as: he doesn't falter when it comes to sacrifice innocent bystanders to reach his goals, he uses a poor, harmless girl for his purposes, endangering her. and yet this who he is, and i think that we've rarely seen him more real than here. he's a troubled soul, who thinks he has nothing more to offer than a good fuck and killing somebody for somebody else. he's alone, he has never been but something to take advantage of, and yet his fidelity, his fealty are such that he's willing to put everything at risk, imcluding his life, just to respect a pact.
the story is interesting, much darker than what we're used to, but finally the author focuses on the plot and its gory ramifictions instead than the romance. and yet the book has some weak parts: there are a few mistakes in the use of the third person, some, stunningly enough, grammatical errors, and it was kinda obvious that becca was going to die in the end - although the last, bloody, horrific chapter, straight out of a horror movie, was unexpected. the other hit man was okay, i hope we'll see more of him in the future, and marie laveau's small cameo was a nice addition.
another small, sweet details were the hints at cat: at the end of the book bones refers to a new job that will ultimately lead him to her, his ban from the city are the premises to the events of 'destined for an early grave'...
i do think that bones is a great character on his own, but, ad vlad remarked in book 4, he really shows his best potential when he's with cat. "maybe our story is that we make each other better", as someone would say. ( )

'Reckoning' is 0.5 in Jeaniene Frost's 'Night Huntress' series, which I have not read. I looked the series up. Heroine Cat Crawford does not appear in this story. Vampire hitman Bones is our protagonist. Real life voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau (1801-1881) is one of the undead and rules New Orleans. (Her title is 'Majestic'.) The Majestic happens to be away, however. Bones is summoned by Jelani, the ghoul Marie left in charge. It seems that notorious sadistic real-life serial torturers and killers Delphine and Louis LaLaurie are here as ghouls taking advantage of Laveau's absence. Jelani was one of their slave-victims. He has prosthetic arms and legs, which means he had to have lost them before he became a ghoul.

If hunting down this pair isn't enough, someone keeps shooting Bones with silver-tipped arrows. Good thing the shooter keeps missing Bones' heart. This adventure starts on February 16, 2004 and ends during the Mardi Gras season that year, before Hurricane Katrina wrecked the city. If you're a history buff, there are some inaccuracies about the LaLauries. The fire that exposed their monstrous actions on April 10, 1834, so the story's tour guide in incorrect to claim the LaLauries were at in in the mid-eighteen hundreds. The building visitors can see today was rebuilt from the ruin of the LaLaurie mansion.

Bones recruits a human, Becca, who actually saw Delphine lure away a victim. He isn't treating her as a disposable tool. He genuinely wants to keep her safe. She seems like a nice lady.

It was interesting to learn that vampires are forbidden to use magic in this series. Also, the Biblical Cain was the first vampire, according to chapter five.

The hunt and the big battle were good reading. If you know the LaLaurie story and are infuriated that they managed to flee and live out their lives, this story should make you feel better. If you want to know if Marie Laveau makes an appearance, she does. Is she more frightening than the LaLauries? Make that a resounding YES!. ( )

It was interesting to get a look at Bones before he met Cat and I really enjoyed getting to see some of his early interactions with Marie, the ghoul queen of New Orleans. It gave me a feel for where some of that bad blood between them came from. However, I have to admit that this novella featuring Bones without Cat was missing a little something - namely Cat. I think that the stories need that chemistry between Cat and Bones to make them work. But it was a good read even with that little bit of magic missing. ( )

Prequel, this takes place just before Bones heads to Ohio to track down an undead accountant and runs into Cat. Bones hunts ghouls eating people during Mardi Gras, while fending off an assassin.
