Blood Pact (Victoria Nelson) (alkuperäinen julkaisuvuosi 1993; vuoden 2004 painos)

I'm not rating this one because I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I didn't like the zombie aspect of the scientific experiments—I can't pinpoint what, but something about that part of the story really rubbed me the wrong way and I found myself dreading reading those sections. Since I have never been a fan of the Henry-Vicki-Mike love triangle, there wasn't much keeping me reading, so I decided to not force the issue.

I... just... wow. This went from being a mediocre series to pure muse abuse, throwing logic, sanity, and pre-existing characterizations under the bus. It's been a long time since I've told a book to go stick its head in a pig.

Glancing to the next book in line, this rots. I'm not willing to keep reading. ( )

Number 9 is NOT alive.

Sex, blood, and romantic triangles. Toss in some parental zombies, mad doctors, and more than a little unfocused rage, and you've got a contemporary Frankenstein, with vampire.

This one has always had a special place, for me. It's set in my hometown, and very few novels are set in Kingston, Ontario. Granted, there are some liberties taken with geography, but not enough (or large enough) to matter. The biggest being the lonely stretch of Division St, down which the zombie of Vicki's mother shambled actually crosses the city's main intersection and straight through the bustling heart of Kingston's nightlife, so in the novel... it doesn't. Cool.

Vicki (Victory Nelson) is a PI and the two other points in her triangle are Mike, a no-bullshit Toronto detective, and Henry, the bastard son of King Henry VIII, vampire and romance author (yes, seriously).

Vicki's mom dies and she comes to do the family duty thing, only to find that someone wouldn't let death be the end, in this case... or in others.

Aside from a bit of personal annoyance at Vicki's constant lack of control, this was pretty good. And it picks up pace, the further in you go. As well, there's no denying that this is the one in the series that changes everything, for all three.

If you like vampire novels, give the series a try, but definitely start with the first. If you don't care about the series, but are from Kingston, then you might find it entertaining. And if you went to Queens University (or grew up detesting its every limestone and brick block), you might find it amusing to see some students and an administrator who are just (in one case, much more than that) on the other side of... normal.

And to the "Number 9" reference: the reanimated corpses are given numbers, rather than names. ( )

This is an enjoyable, entertaining, fast-paced mystery/thriller, urban fantasy novel with great characters. The characters make this series. The ending was rather unexpected and surprising. ( )

Ed ecco, finalmente, che sono riuscita a finire anche questa saga. Ovviamente comprerò anche gli altri due volumi, per curiosità, ma per me la fine resterà comunque questa. C'è poco da fare.

Ho faticato un po' a leggere questo romanzo, e credo che anche la scrittrice abbia faticato un po' a scriverlo. Non saprei, sono sensazioni.
Di fatto molti hanno trovato la trama forzata e scontata. Io l'ho trovata un po' pesante (emotivamente parlando visto che coinvolge la madre della protagonista) ma abbastanza coinvolgente.

L'eterno triangolo fra Vittoria, Henry e Cellucci non avrebbe potuto durare ancora a lungo, stava diventando logorante. Era necessario un colpo di scena. Indipendentemente per 'chi' patteggiasse il lettore, devo ammettere che il colpo di scena c'è stato ed è stato congeniato piuttosto bene.

I cattivi della storia sono piuttosto scadenti, questa volta, ma a colpire sono più 'le azioni' che compiono che loro in quanto personaggi. Dal punto della caratterizzazione è piuttosto banale, a parte forse la Dottoressa. Ma è ciò che fanno che colpisce e fa, spesso, storcere il naso.

Un elemento molto rilevante di questo libro è stato il carattere di Vittoria. Io non ho visto un robot senza emozioni, tutt'altro! Ho visto una donna dal carattere forte che cerca di reprimere le emozioni al punto tale che, alla fine, cessa semplicemente di pensarci. Deve raggiungere un obiettivo, non c'è tempo per 'piangere' disperarsi o che altro... Lei va avanti e cerca di risolvere la situazione, a prescindere dall'assurdità della situazione.
Mi dispiace molto per lei, ma credo che a furia a che fare con il soprannatuale Vittoria stesse perdendo un po' della sua umanità.

Ciò che mi ha sorpresa moltissimo è il rapporto fra Mike e Henry. Onorevoli e corretti l'unico con l'altro anche se, con ogni probabilità, avrebbero solo voglia di staccarsi reciprocamente la testa a morsi. Indipendentemente da chi abbia i canini e chi no. Si sa, la disperazione spesso fa miracoli.

Sinceramente non ne potevo più del triangolo amoroso fra i tre, ero abbastanza stufa. Ed ho sempre patteggiato per Vittoria ed Henry. Ora, questo finale, non mi ha completamente insoddisfatta. Da fan avrei voluto di più. Da lettrice posso dire che è stata molto brava.

Ora cercherò il 5 libro, che pare sia stato scritto solo dopo diverse insistenze dei fan, per la Huff questa sarebbe dovuta essere la fine. Temo che, come al solito, avrebbero dovuto rispettare le scelte dello scrittore. Vedremo... ( )
