I was looking forward to a novel about the French Resistance but this failed miserably. ( ) Marshall Stone is a retired airline pilot who has decided to return to Europe to find the people who helped him evade the Nazis when his plane was hit by the Luftwaffe. As he finds the family that hid him, secrets of what his French protectors went through when they were discovered. Marshall's main purpose in making his trip is to find the young girl who led him through Paris despite the dangers. During his time revisiting the past, Stone comes to learn more about the dangers in Europe than he ever fully appreciated or understood. Having read many historical fiction novels set in this time period, I appreciated the storyline and the development of the characters. That being said, this book was far too long and contained too many people's background stories. At times it was hard to keep track of what character's history was being discussed. If Mason had settled on two characters to be in-depth about it, it would have been easier to follow and a deeper, more meaningful story. The novel gets off to a slow start but finally becomes more interesting about halfway through. Not my favorite Mason book. I listened to this book on CD. The actor's French accent would only fool someone who doesn't know any French. He did not bother to find out how to pronounce commonly known words such as "Marseillaise" or "Citroen." Very frustrating for a francophile. Barney Rawlings an actual pilot in WWII was shot down in his B-17 bomber in Belgium. This is a fictional account, written by his daughter-in-law, of how he and other airmen were saved from the Germans, hidden and cared for until they could be passed along a route back to England. It was an okay read, at times disjointed; frequently backtracking but not necessarily clarifying events. A little disappointed with this book, over half of it was the main character searching for those who had helped him escape back to England after his plane went down. It was not as much of a focus as I’d hoped it would be on the girl, like the title states. Sometimes it was hard to tell if he was having a flash back or if it was current day. It was an interesting story line but not one of my favorite historical fictions. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
