The author has created a vivid picture of Hokitika during the Gold Rush era. The caste of characters, presented in Halfie's, born Tiwakawaka, voice is colourful and memorable. She sustains the innocence and naivete of the narrator throughout, leaving the reader to determine the inference implied in the adult conversations and actions Halfie overhears and witnesses. This is the first book I have read by this author and going by the skill displayed, I will be seeking her earlier books. Hokitika Town is an original, captivating and easy read. Highly recommended. näyttää 3/3 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
I always been a coin boy . . .' Hokitika, 1865, at the height of the Gold Rush. In a town with a hundred pubs, young Halfie ? aka Harvey, Thumbsucker, Bedwetter, Cocoa and Pipsqueak ? gets by as best he can. Most of the time he hangs around the Bathsheba pub, washing dishes, running errands and making the odd coin ? and observing from close quarters the parade of miners, dancing girls, petty crims and plain drunks that passes through the doors. When you're a coin boy you see a lot of life, and from low down. But how much do you really understand? What's going on in young Halfie's world? In this beguiling new novel by the author of The Curative, a rattling good yarn reveals that life is rarely what it seems. 'Among our contemporary writers of adult fiction, only Elizabeth Knox can match Charlotte Randall for the sheer scope of her imagination.'?New Zealand Listener Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

A word to describe this novel has to be lyrical. It was like music to my ears; from the descriptions of the characters and life in the Gold Rush to the phonetic spelling of Halfie’s talking. Written with strong and interesting characters that pull at your heart strings and full of history, this book will be added to my top 10 books, I just loved it. Recommended to mature readers over 16 years. ( )
