Read the vast majority on a plane in one unbroken streak. Larson can really put the ants in your pants -- the descriptions of Berlin in its tensest moments, the hesitant and all-but-certain development of characters, the foreshadowing he occasionally dumps in explicit Stephen Kingesian manner all conspire to make this one chilling page-turner.

My favorite morsels most likely included:

-Martha's love affairs. Diels and Boris especially exhibited such larger-than-life personalities with such strong, responsive emotions, and Larson humanized the Gestapo chief and Soviet officer to such an extent that I deeply wished for things to work out for them at the end.

-The setting -- the kind of physical sense of congesting anxiety that pervaded Berlin in 1933-1937, in the heat as well as in the cold, and in the Tiergarten park as well as in the countryside, is something I haven't really seen until this book, which made the rising support for Hitler clear.

-The Night of the Long Knives -- one of the craziest, most savage traumas of history that changed the course of the 20th century, and which I was not really aware of until this book, which told it rivetingly. ( )

Once, at the dawn of a very dark time, an American father and his daughter found themselves suddenly transported from their snug home in Chicago to the heart of Hitler's Berlin. They remained there for four and a half years, but it is their first year that is the subject of the story to follow , for it coincided with Hitler's ascent from chancellor to absolute tyrant, when everything hung in the balance and nothing was certain. That first year formed a kind of prologue in which all the themes of the greater epic of war and murder soon to come were laid down.

One more book about the Third Reich? In this case, I'm glad I took a chance on the book. ( )

"In the Garden of Beasts" describes life in pre-WWII Germany, as told through the story of the U.S. German Ambassador and his family in Berlin. It's always been hard for me to understand how a great Nation like Germany could have been led to behave and condone the policies of Hitler and the Nazi's, and this book tells some of the story of how the people were swayed. It's also hard to understand how the rest of the world seemed to stand by and not take stronger steps to stop the hatred and mistreatment of its citizens during that time, and this book provides a few insights into this area as well.
But the story isn't told as a history of the time. Rather, it's told through the personal story of the Ambassador, and his family, through their interactions with the citizens and political leaders of Germany. So while touching on some of the developing laws and policies enacted during that transitional time, they're brought out primarily by personalizing the affects of those changes through the eyes of the ambassador, his family, and especially his daughter. Ambassador Dodd's daughter Martha was one of the more interesting individuals featured, having several relationships with several of the powerful in German society of the day.
Richard Evan's "The Coming of the Third Reich" may be a better book for pure history, but "In the Garden of Beasts" tells a similar story from a more personalized and individual perspective. ( )

This was a strange but fascinating look at one family's inside view of pre-WWII Nazi Germany. Although really well written, I had a hard time keeping straight the many names of the people involved with the main story being told. Still, a great narrative put together by Larson with only a few slow parts to get through in the first half of the book. ( )

William E. Dodd was an academic historian, living a quiet life in Chicago, when Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him United States ambassador to Germany. It was 1933, Hitler had recently been appointed chancellor, the world was about to change.

Had Dodd gone to Berlin by himself, his reports of events, his diary entries, his quarrels with the State Department, his conversations with Roosevelt would be source material for specialists. But the general reader is in luck on two counts: First, Dodd took his family to Berlin, including his young, beautiful and sexually adventurous daughter, Martha; second, the book that recounts this story, “In the Garden of Beasts,” is by Erik Larson, the author of “The Devil in the White City.” Larson has meticulously researched the Dodds’ intimate witness to Hitler’s ascendancy and created an edifying narrative of this historical byway that has all the pleasures of a political thriller: innocents abroad, the gathering storm. . . .

"Hardly anyone thought that the threats against the Jews were meant seriously," wrote Carl Zuckmayer, a Jewish writer.
Even the language used by Hitler and party officials was weirdly inverted. The term "fanatical" became a positive trait. Suddenly it connoted what philologist Victor Klemperer, a Jewish resident of Berlin, described as a "happy mix of courage and fervent devotion."
"There has been nothing in social history more implacable, more heartless and more devastating than the present policy in Germany against the Jews..."
An odd kind of fanciful thinking seemed to have bedazzled Germany, to the highest levels of government. Earlier in the year, for example, Goring had claimed with utter sobriety that three hundred German Americans had been murdered in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia at the start of the past world war. Messersmith, in a dispatch, observed that even smart, well-traveled Germans will "sit and calmly tell you the most extraordinary fairy tales."
After experiencing life in Nazi Germany, Thomas Wolfe wrote, "Here was an entire nation ... infested with the contagion of an ever-present fear. It was a kind of creeping paralysis which twisted and blighted all human relations."
