A laugh a minute! Keep having to rewind to re-hear some great turn of phrase! Startling how timely. Just love Terry Pratchett. Love listening to them with my husband, makes for kitchen chores flying by! ( ![]() The men of the Night Watch are back in action, weather they want to be or not, in this newest adventure. The Assisans Guild is missing a very dangerous items known as the Gonne, several bodies followed its disappearence, and it's up to the Night Watch to find it and put it out of commission. I love Sam Vimes and the rest of his crew and this one is great fun! Men at Arms finds political correctness overtaking the City Watch and Captain Vimes less than enthusiastic about his forthcoming retirement. But after all, when a man weds a Lady, even the earthy and honest Lady Sybil Ramkin, Society has certain expectations. For one thing, he certainly cannot continue to spend his evenings pounding the cobbles of Ankh-Morpork like any common man of the Watch. Besides, Corporal Carrot is turning into a real leader of men Very enjoyable, more so than I recalled. More story and action than in some of the Discworld books; this is essentially a murder mystery, as well as a political statement about violence in general, and a look at how different races get along or otherwise - and they are truly different races on the Disc. Trolls and dwarfs, for instance, are sworn enemies. There's some humour, some romance, in a low-key kind of way, some satire, and quite poignant scenes towards the end. It's a long time since I read this book; at least twenty years, possibly longer, unless I read it aloud to my teenage sons and forgot to note it. Best to read after 'Guards, Guards!', as the story continues from there, with several people and situations that were introduced in that book. Also ideally read after 'Moving Pictures' where both Detritus the troll and Gaspode the talking dog first appeared. Longer review here: https://suesbookreviews.blogspot.com/2020/10/men-at-arms-by-terry-pratchett.html This is the first Pratchett novel I read. This novel is why I'm addicted to Pratchett! It's still my favorite of the Discworld series.
Though dotted with good and bad jokes Men at Arms isn't as purely funny as some of the series' earlier installments. Racial prejudice and gun control elicit some uncomfortably close-to-the-bone satire, while the search for the killer and his weapon is almost too gripping. By all means, give Pratchett a try, though you might want to start with, say, The Color of Magic or Guards! Guards! These books can sometimes be hard to find, even in paperback, but they repay any effort expended. I keep my copies on the shelf next to P.G. Wodehouse and Donald Westlake.
'Be a MAN in the City Watch! The City Watch needs MEN!' But what it's got includes Corporal Carrot (technically a dwarf), Lance-constable Cuddy (really a dwarf), Lance constable Detritus (a troll), Lance constable Angua (a woman... most of the time) and Corporal Nobbs (disqualified from the human race for shoving). And they need all the help they can get. Because they've only got twenty-four hours to clean up the town and this is Ankh-Morpork we're talking about... No library descriptions found. |
