Funny, true to life and very re-readable. ( )

This is the first Discworld book I've read and I think I was expecting much more than what it had to offer (give the hype he has). It also took me quite some time to read it. It starts off slowly and it takes time for things to piece together (which did not help) so I probably read the first half over two months. The latter half I read in a day because then I had started getting used to the storyline always being shifted between perpendicular storylines.

I could imagine that on a second reading or once I get more accustomed to the Disc World series (or T.P. style) I would rate this book higher.

I still give it three stars because it is definitely not a bad book. It does make you smile, laugh out loud and it has this *feel good* vibe which makes escaping into an alternative world so comfy and nice. But that was it, for me at least. ( )

The first in the subseries of the Watch and what an acquaintance with Captain Vimes, Sergeant Colon, Nobby, and Lance-Constable Carrot (the new kid, who volunteered for the Watch. One does not simply volunteer for this profession), who's not really a dwarf,but grew up among them.

Each has his own character, his own way of being. Carrot's strict application of the law is simpy brilliant. Even if the Watch isn't the best police force ever, they sort of manage to right the wrong, one way or another, directly or indirectly.

I can't (or rather, don't want to) go too much into detail, but the many happenings, caused by the Patrician, the Librarian (ape, not monkey! Oook!), the dragon(s) (big and little), ... made this a very entertaining and wonderful adventure.

Pratchett's typical humour, the various playing with words, the philosophy (throughout the book, but especially towards the end) and the exquisite writing style, turn(ed) this into one of the best Discworld-novels.

Furthermore, he managed very well to keep my attention, as there were many things I didn't expect.

To keep it short: Heavily recommended! I hope to read more Watch novels in due time.

This is currently my last Discworld-novel. I'll have to get more, next year or so. ( )

This is the kind of book that ends as the reader chuckles. It is packed with interesting characters and simple philosophies like "There is always and only bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides." And people who "sin, you might say, without a trace of originality." A fun read. ( )
