Deeply disappointing. Enjoyed touching the Void years ago, perhaps because he had a story to tell. here we just get bitty ramblings, not much mountain, and clunking lumps of laddish humour.he has a good line in poetic-sounding titles but it doesn't extend into the body of the work. ( )

I didn't enjoy this as much as Joe Simpson's other works, and could have done without the graphic descriptions of his and other people's injuries. However, some of the climbing anecdotes were interesting, and I learnt about the political situation in Tibet and Peru. ( )

But behind the rich tapestry of adventures lies a dark and brooding disquiet. He recalls the terrifying avalanche that nearly wiped out his base camp during an attempt on the unclimbed north face of Gangchempo in the Himalaya.
