Hilariously, the copy that applied to Yeoman Rand in "Star Trek 1" is now taken word for word to apply to Uhura.

Part of the reason why I rated this book so highly is that it was the first Star Trek book I ever read. In fact, it was one of the first adult books ("adult" in the sense of, "not a children's book") I ever read. This one started me on all the James Blish episode novelizations. ( )

Continuing my 2020 re-watch / re-read, I've reached the end of season one and the end of Star Trek 2, which like volume 1 contained only first season episodes. These are very short novelizations, usually focusing on only the point of view of the Enterprise crew and dropping any scenes set completely separate from them. Adapted from early scripts rather than finished episodes, some stories have noticeable differences, but only one was almost unrecognizable, "Operation -- Annihilate", which had an entirely different ending and solution to the invasion. It didn't even include Kirk's family, just unrelated characters that have managed to avoid being taken over. It's a very interesting re-experience of TOS after decades in fandom. ( )
