Biography of the Anglo-Indian writer who I first discovered when I read In This House of Brede in high school. I've enjoyed her other novels, some about nuns as well as those about India. Her father was a businessman prior to independence and because of World War I she and her sisters stayed with their parents instead of being sent "home" to England for their education, and they all grew up with a deep love for India. She always knew her destiny was to be a writer, and worked at her craft till the end of her long life. It's not a thrilling story, but interesting to watch as she develops her skills and see how she shapes her experiences into stories. ( ) An interesting biography of a woman who saw the end of the Raj in India (and hated the term Raj). A woman who often put work before family and paid the price. Who converted to Catholicism and wrote sympathetically about the religious life. Who would probably have been hell to live with but you'd never have really wanted for anything. She was lucky she wasn't exploited more by her friends as that would have been quite easy. She never really had complete success from her career and often didn't earn an awful lot but those around her often benefited well from her work. näyttää 2/2 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
The compelling biography of the beloved author of Black Narcissus and The Greengage SummerBorn in India, at the height of British colonial power, she lived there until the 1950s. Her career as a novelist began with Black Narcissus which became a bestseller on publication in 1939 - and like many of her novels - was adapted into a film. Her relationship with India, although passionate, was ultimately and perhaps inevitably ambivalent and this ambivalence came to a head in an incident when she and her children were living in Kashmir. A servant tried to poison them and the notoriety surrounding the case forced Godden to leave Kashmir and eventually India itself. Her move from India to Scotland contains parallel themes and adventures akin to themes within her novels. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
