Kids are wild, wacky, and wise-and those are precisely the traits that creative writers and thinkers need. Yet as kids move through the school system with its tests and grades, they too often lose their innate ability to simply have fun playing with words. Rip the Page! Adventures in Creative Writing invites children (ages eight to twelve) to pick up a pen and find out for themselves all the ways that creative writing can be their friend. This interactive book offers experiments to strengthen the "write-side" of their brains-with wordplay, open-ended experiments, do-it-yourself definitions, double-dares, word lists galore, and enough blank pages to roam-and rip!-on their journey of discovering that playing with words is precisely what creative writers do to warm up to the page. Rip the Page! empowers kids to play with words simply for the sake of playing and it endows budding writers with confidence about finding the words they need to use to express what they mean. Kids discover their own words on their own terms. On the page, no one can argue with you, disagree with you . . . or tell you that you're wrong. The book includes encouragement from acclaimed poets and writers, including Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler), Naomi Shihab Nye, Gary Soto, Annie Barrows, Lucille Clifton, Karen Cushman, Patricia Polacco, and others. Children's nonfiction; creative writing. [reviewed from e-galley.] This kid-friendly book is packed with ideas and exercises to help any writer "Break rules. Take risks.... Make 'mistakes.'" I can imagine this book being heavily used by teachers or homeschoolers to get non-writers interested in wordsmithing, or to aid more avid writers to break out of their molds a little. Includes notes and tips from well-known children's authors (Annie Barrows, Lemony Snicket). ( )

What if you had a child, age 12 and up, who enjoyed writing? How could you encourage him or her to continue to write stories or poetry? This book by Karen Benke fills that need. The book consists of a whole series of ways to spur you on when your minds draws a blank. In most cases, the author left room for the child to write inside the book. She even says that the reader may rip pages out--thus, the title. While the book would make a very nice gift, I doubt if libraries want to carry books that are meant to be used as workbooks. As I browsed different chapters, I found short blurbs of advice from established authors to the kids reading the book, and I thought to myself that the book functions as an incentive to get the kids interested in books by these authors. The graphic design is very appealing. As to the index in the back of the book, I did not find it helpful at all because it simply lists titles of assignments that read like nonsense.

In this interactive book, kids are encouraged to rip, bend, and write on the pages! The book comes with tons of hands-on activity ideas, as well as activities in the book themselves.

Been flipping through this at random, which seems to be the best way to approach the ideas and prompts . . . find ones that suit you and play around with them. Z liked reading some of the advice from writers (Lemony Snicket!) . . . and we've been playing a "favorite word" list game kind of maniacally. ( )
