Ei tämänhetkisiä Keskustelu-viestiketjuja tästä kirjasta. Amusing Victorian romance and mystery. First book in a series, the ending sets up the second novel. The heroine was plucky when necessary; the hero was a bit too ideal, too tortured a la Mr. Rochester and Heathcliff. In fact, the author namechecks those novels and some by Austen. However. The author dissed "Northanger Abbey" which in unforgivable, especially since that novel was a satire of mystery romances. First book of the year in the books: Silent In the Grave by Deanna Raybourne. This is the first book in her Lady Julia Grey series. I've enjoyed her Veronica Speedwell series and this book did not disappoint as it also features a strong female lead who manages to put aside her Victorian sensibilities. The book opens with the death of Lady Grey's husband, Edward. His death is not a surprise as he comes from a sickly family, and it is only a year after his demise that Julia, along with her husband's friend, Nicholas Brisbane begin to consider the possibility of murder. There are fascinating twists in both the characters and the plot. In addition, Raybourn brings authentic historical realism to her novels. Loved it, couldn't put it down! I rarely give a book five stars, but I thought the book was well written. I was completely lost in the story. Brisbane was dark and mysterious, Lady Julia was naive and could be sort of an airhead then come across as smart. I thought the time period came through. There were some lines that made me laugh, there was sadness, I will definitely continue with the series. The first third of this novel was intriguing and the story well-set in terms of the characters and the situation(s) surrounding the household and extended families. However... the telling became bumpy and unrealistic for a late 19th century society in the wealthy aristocratic class. The author appeared to wander into a much too-modern manner for this era and was carried away by her involving the main protagonist (Julia) in an investigation unsuited to her social standing. The investigator, Nicholas Brisbane, was initially a nice foil for Julia but descended into a rocky, Sherlockian type of character with an unnecessarily complex illness. I liked the tie in to the Roma people and enjoyed Raybourn's character sketches of Julia's extended family, but for my tastes this series can't hold a candle to C. S. Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr historical mysteries. Too many aspects of Lady Julia Grey's antics come across as implausible.
Book to be savored, yet devoured in one sitting. Sisältyy tähän:
Only from New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn, go back to where it all began with the original Lady Julia Grey historical mystery series. "Let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave." These ominous words are the last threat that Sir Edward Grey receives from his killer. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, he collapses and dies at his London home, in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests. Prepared to accept that Edward's death was due to a long-standing physical infirmity, Julia is outraged when Brisbane visits and suggests that her husband was murdered. It is a reaction she comes to regret when she discovers damning evidence for herself, and realizes the truth. Determined to bring the murderer to justice, Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward's demise. Dismissing his warnings that the investigation will be difficult, if not impossible, Julia presses forward, following a trail of clues that lead her to even more unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.
