Re-read it for the millionth time or so for a podcast episode where I talk about how it's one of my comfort reads. This has been one of my favorite books since sixth grade. Love it every time I read it. ( ![]() listening to the audio book read by Tim Curry A good example of this genre. While I don't read young adult fantasy, I was lent this book and found it well written and set in a believable world with a plot that was absorbing. I thought it had a bit of the Ancient Greek epics influences showing through which is always a good thing. Nix, Garth. Sabriel. HarperCollins, 1995. Old Kingdom 1. Sabriel is the daughter of Abhorsen, a master necromancer charged with putting the unhappily raised dead to rest. Sabriel lives in a pseudo-European country with early twentieth-century technology. The town is near the border of the Old Kingdom, where magic, especially necromancy, is strong. When Abhorsen goes missing in the realm of the dead, his daughter senses his danger and pursues him into the Old Kingdom, where she hopes to find and revive him before he passes the final gate into permanent death. She is accompanied by a snarky magic cat and a revived man from ancient days. Sabriel is a young-adult, father-daughter coming-of-age story that reminded me so strongly of Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass, a.k.a., Northern Lights, that I was sure one book must have influenced the other. But they came out the same year, so it seems more a case of confluence than influence. 4 stars. This book is SO GOOD. I've been meaning to get this particular edition (because the covers are gorgeous) for years and then do a reread, and I'm so happy it's happening. The world-building in this series is GREAT, I love that it's set in some sort of alternate reality that you recognize well enough without being cheesy or dumb. I like that it's semi-set in the past but there doesn't seem to be any obvious sexism going on, no one is questioning if a girl can do whatever, things just are the way they are. That is such a nice way to write fantasy. And the characters are good, well-written and complex, with a plot that is constantly moving forward while doing interesting exposition without getting boring. It's just ... so well done. My only regret is not finding and reading this series in my teens because it would have changed my entire life I think. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
