- The Institute of Ocean Sciences Library opened in 1972 to support the research activities of Fisheries & Oceans Canada's (DFO) newly established west coast oceanographic research institute. It continues in this role providing a wide range of services to DFO research staff and members of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) across Western Canada, including Ontario, the Canadian Prairies, British Columbia, Yukon, and the Canadian Arctic. The Library provides the same range of services to the research staff of Natural Resources Canada's Pacific Geosciences Centre, which is housed in the same building complex, as well as local employees of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the North Pacific Marine Sciences Organization (PICES). The Library offers public services to consultants from the local marine research community, as well as research staff of other government and academic facilities in the Victoria area. Members of the public may use and photocopy library materials on site. The Library provides loans and photocopies to other libraries worldwide through international interlibrary loan (ILL).
The library has collections in the areas of oceanography, hydrography, environmental and marine science, geology, geophysics, seismology and earthquake studies. The library holds over 100,000 catalogued items, including books, journals, and technical reports, plus subscribes to thousands of electronic resources. The Library's holdings are accessible through the Federal Science Library Network's online union catalogue.
