- A real gem! This independent book store was originally established in 1964, moved around the downtown a few times before settling upon its current location in the heart of the mid-coast community. In 2002 owner Susan Porter and her husband Barney added the Cafe next door. MCBS is immensely popular with locals and visitors from away who enjoy the store's extensive collection of Maine-themed and/or -authored titles in addition to a great selection of staff picks. Visiting authors are frequently on hand for book signings (sometimes held at Skidompha Public Library just two doors up the block).
