Does anyone know how to find local book clubs other than word of mouth? I've searched for a list or directory online and didn't find anything.

I wanted to find books clubs that meet in person, not run by libraries and that focus of classics and/or literary fiction. But I couldn't find anything at all...

Good luck! I'm in two RL clubs, one at my library and one with a bunch of lady friends. The library club meetings are much less social, but we also spend the whole time actually discussing the book. It is sponsored by the library, but run by a volunteer, not by staff. The other club is by invite only and we do more eating and drinking than we do discussing books. In fact, several people never seem to read the books. They both serve different purposes. The classics are few and far between in both groups, sadly.

Let us know how it goes. You could ask at some of the libraries near you. A lot of clubs meet there, but aren't run by the library staff. And do think about starting your own, if you can't find one.

Thanks. I did try starting my own a couple of years ago but it never really took off. I think I've found a club that meets near New Haven that sounds like a good balance between social and literary.

I've been in a group for over a year but it's really heavy on the social part and very light on the discussion of the books. That's fine, but it's starting to make me wonder why I'm putting in so much effort.
