Just a reminder that Banned Books Week starts today, Saturday September 25, 2010.
In my tradition of impromptu ReadaThings (and because the announcement over in the Banned Books group isn't getting much response :) I suggest that people try to read a Banned or Challenged book this week and post something about it here. No sign up required.

Alternatively, pop over to http://www.librarything.com/topic/98779
and chat about it in the Banned Books group . . .

I think I'm going to reread To Kill a Mockingbird since it was banned and this is its 50th year anniversary.

Thanks for that message. I didn't know about Banned Books week and advertised it at work; curious to see if it generates interest... I've read so many of those banned books, I can't imagine literature without them!

For Banned Books Week I read:
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and Lord of the Flies.

Both of these were books that I had not previously read. I had been avoiding Lord of the Flies for years since I knew what the book was about, and the concept didn't interest me. Fortunately, my husband convinced me that I should read it. While I did not "enjoy" the story, I do believe that it is a well written, thoughtful, and important work.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, was a lot more enjoyable, even if it was also about another distasteful subject, racism. I will gladly read the other books in the Long Family series.
