What re-tellings of Native American tales are out there? I'm looking mostly for Cherokee and Catawba stories, but any tribe's tales would be nice.

We just picked up a copy of Trickster by Matt Dembicki, which is a fascinating collection of Native American folktales put together by pairing a Native American story-teller with various artists to bring their stories to life in graphic novel style. It's gorgeous - I highly recommend it.

There are lots of lovely picture book retellings: Rafe Martin has done a few that are well regarded (I haven't read them though), such as The Rough-Face Girl which is an Algonquin Cinderella tale, and also Sootface by Robert San Souci which is similar (Ojibwa).

Neil Gaiman's fantasy series with American Gods and Anansi Boys are loads of fun, and have plenty of interesting Native American folklore 'retold' and entwined into the tales.

I also really like The Coyote Road edited by Ellen Datlow. It is a series of retellings of trickster folklore, but only a couple are Native American tales.

ps Elizabeth Ann Scarborough's Godmother series adapts various folklore in each of the volumes, and the third volume The Godmother's Web includes retold Native American folklore with Coyote and Kokopelli, etc.

Onion Girl and Widdershins by Charles De Lint are really great urban fantasy which revolve around Native American spirits as characters, such as Coyote and Raven. The stories aren't JUST about re-telling those tales, but they play a significant role in the novels.

Sacred Ground by Mercedes Lackey has Native American plot elements like de Lint's books in 4.
