Just saw this fabulous show at the Columbia College Center for Book and Paper Arts!

The full title is A Movable Feast: Pop-ups, Volvelles, Tunnels, Flaps and Other Movable Books. There are scads of fascinating movable books displayed to show the history and process of the form. Represented artists include Ernest Nister and Robert Sabuda, and there is an entire separate exhibition dedicated to the work of Voitech Kubasta.

If you're in Chicago, visit the Center at 1104 S. Wabash, 2nd Floor. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it's free. The exhibit is up through September 23.

Okay, I'm a year and a half late, but I sure wish I could have gone to this!

Oh, darn it - I wasn't there at the time, but I've been since, and I would have loved it...

Still, I didn't visit till 2007, so I missed it pretty squarely. Nevertheless, it sounds wonderful, and I'm grateful, lilithcat, that you posted it - and may note things like it. I'll be back in Chicago in another month or two, I think. Is the gallery it was in usually interesting? It would be an easy one for me to get to, from where I'll be staying.

The Society that held this event should be having another one in 2008. They move the event around the country but I'm hoping that it will be something I can get to! If lilith is on the mailing list, maybe she'll keep us informed.

(I started doing some searching last night and found this all out. I also got interested in carousel books and bought one of those.)

I just realized that the full-size paper (cardstock)skeleton I gave my ex is a great example of paper art! It came in a kit and he put it together. It was a great office decoration (and now a halloween decoration).
