The new 2.5 software can be manually downloaded and USB-installed to your K2 root directory. The directions and the download are available at the above link and it's really pretty easy to do.

One caution when you add Samples to a "Collection." (Creating a "Collection" isn't dangerous, it's adding the Sample that is.) You go to the Home screen, scroll to the book, and then push the scroll button to the right to get the menu page that includes all those options like "Book Description" and that kind of stuff.

Now here's where to BEWARE! If you're moving all your Samples to a "Collection" the first option on the menu page, by DEFAULT, will be to BUY the book. You need to push your scroll button downward to select the next option, ADD TO COLLECTION.

BEWARE!!! It's very easy to accidentally press the scroll button and wind up BUY-ing the book.

I have well over a hundred Samples on my K2, and I moved them all to a Samples Collection without accidentally BUY-ing any of them, so it can be done if you're careful. Just be aware of what you're doing so you don't wind up accidentally pressing that scroll button to BUY something when you mean to move downward to the next option, ADD TO COLLECTION.

Have fun with the new software. Once you install it to your root directory, you'll go to "Settings" and then to "Update Your Kindle" and it will take about ten minutes or so to update and then restart. You won't be able to use your Kindle while this is going on, and don't turn it off until everything's completed and your K2 has restarted. The instructions are all on the link I've posted, and it's really easy.

Just be careful if you're moving Samples to a Collection that you don't accidentally BUY something.

Thanks for all the tips, Currerbell! Good work. Timid, I think I'll wait for the auto update. I'm not so anxious to work on collections and I'm definitely not excited about accidently buying books.

>1 CurrerBell: Thanks so much for the advice CurrerBell! I have been stung once before with Kindle samples, accidentally hitting 'Buy' instead of 'Book Description' (and then quickly reversing the purchase). I was refunded for the book but still had to pay the small international transaction fee to my bank. Lesson learned!! (BTW, I do think they should have some sort of confirmation check prior to purchase. Accidental purchase must happen quite a lot).

As a precaution I moved all of my Samples off the Kindle and onto my PC before installing 2.5.2. I figure I don't really need the Samples anyhow and will probably only look at them using Kindle for PC from now on.

Thanks again for alerting me to the manual update and your advice :)

The text justification of some of my (Project Gutenberg) ebooks has gone a little awry with the new software. It seems OK with the tiny fonts but with the medium fonts there are 'ragged' edges down the right hand side of the text. Not the world's most attractive look. I wonder if Amazon will correct it?
