I could have sworn we had an FAQ type thing somewhere that answers this...
LibraryThing is a book cataloguing site, for entering data about books, plus some social features. It's not a site that provides the books for reading. But if you go to a particular work page of a book which you're interested in reading, there is a green box with a link that says "Get this book". If you click it, it'll take you to a page which lists different ways to find the book to read it. If it's available via Project Gutenberg or Google Books, there will be a link so you can read it online. But there will always be links to different places where you can purchase the book, too.

Perhaps you should take a look at the tour about this site.
Most importantly for you the 4th paragraph states:
Our community does not buy, lend or sell books online.
>2 keristars: keristars
There is this thread for a similar question... was that the one you meant?

Nah, there are a bunch of threads where the question has been asked. I'd thought that in the wiki a page had been made "Can You Read Books on LT?" or something of the sort. Apparently, I was misremembering the tour. And maybe also previous discussions about creating such a page for linking to.

I remember too; there was that heap of threads in Book Talk and Site Talk (and elsewhere too probably)a while ago with this question; so much so that it became a worry and there was an idea about doing something about it, I thought too.
I just can't remember what was considered...so I offered the tour.

Oh, you reminded me to look again. I found this from the "how do I..." section of the FAQ page: http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Your_library_and_your_books#Can_I_rea...
So it does exist! It's just not very prominent, I guess.

*ahem* AGAIN I re-state the need for a more prominate Help place. Most newbies have no idea a wiki EXISTS, and would never think to look for one.

Well there's the help button at the top of every page that takes you to WikiHelp for that page. Isn't that prominent enough?

Uh... Can you read books here for free? If not , then are there any where else to read for free? With no credit card or info that you have to type ?
11Marissa_Doyle
Uh... public libraries?

Gutenberg.org has lots of books to read online or download. They are old books that are out of copyright.

Archive.org also has old books available online.

https://openlibrary.org/ (which is run by the nice folks at archive.org) lets people lease many books even if they are still copyrighted.

>15 lilithcat: I know that there are copyrighed book on Internet Archive. However I also know that OpenLibrary lends (copyrighted) books protected with Adobe Digital Edition, with a lease during 15 days; the same thing happens for example in Italy with MediaLibraryOnline, which is a service of ebook lending which libraries pay for (MediaLibrary is a private firm).

Point is that they are using unauthorized scans. It's not okay, and people should be aware of the situation before they use Open Library.

Very misleading. The word library implies you look for a book and then read it. Not then go out of the library, having been told you can't read it here, and buy it.

>18 bobbyrooks:
Not that misleading. It is a website for your home library, your collection of books.

>18 bobbyrooks: Agreed. I thought this was a place you could read books, like an online library.

>21 l1ly.vee: Did you read the thread? You don't, at least not here. LibraryThing is a cataloging site, not a pirate site or library.

If people can read, the sign in page, right there before you sign up says, "LibraryThing
A Home For Your Books.
LibraryThing is a free, library-quality catalog to track reading progress or your whole library."
It does not say anything about being a place to get books to read.
