Belva, here's an article that I found interesting http://chronicle.com/article/Reading-Dickens-Four-Ways/44461

Ann Kirschener, a New York university dean and author, read Dickens' Little Dorritt in four different ways: kindle, iphone, paperback and audio book.

As for me, I think I'll stick to the old fashioned paper book and audio books for car and ipod. The kindle is only just reaching the shores of Australia (I believe we're not even getting the latest model), so I really shouldn't dismiss it without at least seeing how it works. The major advantage of the kindle seems to be that many books can be loaded onto for vacations and journeys.

Great article sp. I hope a lot of people read it.
I simply need a painfree way to hold my books to read them while lying down. I think any of the electronic modes would work. The Apple model does sound very exciting. Thank you.

Belva,

I have read and used all three forms too. I think that the writer of that article is a little shortsighted. She says she reads it on the iphone because its always with her and she wouldn't want to carry around another device with cords and such. Well, first, what about people without iphones? You aren't going to buy an iphone to read books on it, thats silly.

Also, I carry my kindle around and its very thin, very portable and I never carry the cords because it last days without needing to be charged.

The iPhone is relatively easy to read on (I did that before I bought my kindle) but I find that using the kindle is more enjoyable. I like being able to keep my place in all the books, mark favorite passages and save them, look up words if I need too etc. On the iphone you may be able to do these things, but its not as easy. And should you get a call or have to do something else, you must put the book away to do it. With the kindle, its a lot like having a book, its right there waiting for you regardless of where your phone is. I like being able to put my phone on silent and not being interrupted by txt messages or phone calls when I'm reading.. which is only possible if your book ISN'T your phone.

That said, the new apple tablet looks really cool. If you're going to go for comparing something, I'd choose between that or the kindle. I think the real question is, do you want to buy a mini-computer with ebook capabilities, or do you want to buy an ebook reader?
