One can see that
#1 the German article Das is not handeled in Das Erbe : Roman
#2 the Dutch article De is not handeled in De dood van Methusalem : verhalen
#3 the Spanish article El is not handeled in El Spinoza de la calle Market
#4 the Italian article L' is not handeled in L' ultimo demone e altri racconti
#5 the *indefinite* Italian article Un is not handeled in Un amico di Kafka
What is the exact syntax to influence the sort order? Where such indications should be used?
#a for definite and indefinite articles only?
#b also for prepositions ?

On Ubuntu 7.10 I can generate with a German keybord the character ¬ with AltGr+^ . Would « ¬ » be an appropriate character to indicate the start of the sort key?

You can use a double vertical bar "|" to indicate where to sort titles. (There can't be a blanket identifier of articles, since a sequence of characters that is an article in one language can also be a word in another; compare "Die" in English and German, for instance.)
So in your case you would simply enter the title as "Das ||Erbe" or "Un ||Amico...". You can also use this technique to short-circuit automatic recognition of English-language articles , e.g. "||A is for Alibi".
