We launched an expedition to the Ashe County Cheese factory in West Jefferson, NC where their happy mountain cows have been working away to keep us in cheese and old fashioned butter. We came away with some great looking blue cheeses and a horseradish cheese that is to die for. Also, some waxed sharp cheddars in shapes like ginger bread men, candy canes, Xmas trees, stars ...you get the idea.

Anyone else having a Christmas cheese adventure, or a Channukah, Kwanzaa, Solstice, New Year's or any other kind of cheese fun?

Ooh - I did lots of cheese tasting today. A new deli opened in a local town recently and there was a (very small) local farmers market today. So four specials for the Holiday season cheese board are

From the deli
Delice de Bourgone (triple cream cheese - soft Brie like)

Lord of the Hundreds (hard sheep's milk cheese)

and Cantal Morin (a hard French cheese I think aged with a porcini mushroom crust/rind or at least it takes on a porcini flavour somehow)

from the farmers market
Hafod Welsh Organic Cheddar (single source milk - from Ayrshire cows)

All very delicious.

I brought a cheese I never tried before (cranberry covered goat cheese) to a holiday gathering last night. I got to bring the left-overs home. YUM!
