Renovations at Giovanni's Room Will Start Soon
Fund Drive Off to a Roaring Start
Please Keep Shopping
The William Proud Restoration Masonry Co. will begin reconstruction of the 12th St. wall at Giovanni's Room this week or next, they say. Ed Hermance, owner of Giovanni's Room, said this period of reconstruction will be a critical time for the store, "The store cannot afford to be closed, it cannot afford even a slow down in sales. Even a small drop in sales would put us in the red. We need people to stick with us, to make an extra effort to get to the store or order by phone and online. We'll be here!"

Scaffolding will cover the façade of the building, and the main entrance, on 12th St., will be closed till 3 pm each weekday. When the main entrance is closed, the store will be open through the side door at 1145 Pine St.

The fund raising for the project, estimated to cost about $55,000, is off to a roaring start. To date, we have raised more than $7,500 in donations, mostly for bricks ($50 each) and lintels ($500 each).

Among the fund raising activities that are firmly underway are:

1. A major presence at this year's OutFest, Philadelphia's block party in celebration of National Coming Out Day, Sunday, 10/11/09. We will have:
a. An LGBT Publishers' Row will display books by local publishers and an Austin, Texas, publisher. Many local authors will attend.
b. A "circus" with a stilt-walker, clowns, and face-painting for young and old. We are currently negotiating to have an acrobat and Spiral Q's enormous puppets.
c. Vendors including Bitch Mode t-shirt producer, Joe Coffee's locally roasted fair trade organic coffee, and more. We hope another dozen vendors will join us--let us know if you would like to sell you wares here--OutFest has agreed to give our vendors a cut rate
d. An in-store bake sale, with goods supplied by volunteers. If you would like to contribute, let us know.

2. A series of private author dinners. Set is a private dinner with Edmund White on Thursday, 10/8/09, following his reading in the store. People willing and able to pay for excellent food and beverage will be treated to conversation with him and maybe 10 or 12 other diners. Christopher Rice and Samuel R. Delany are confirmed for similar dinners, though the dates have not been set. We plan to schedule six or more such dinners this fall.

3. A raffle. The grand prize is a weekend in Philadelphia, with hotel accommodations, restaurant dinners, theater tickets, and museum passes. Other prizes will include hotel accommodations, theater tickets, a night of dining, and more. The drawing will be held in the store on or about Saturday, December 12, 2009.

4. A Get-Rich-Quick Event

And we've only begun to plan!

If you would like to help with any of these activities, please email Elly Porter-Webb at ellypw@gmail.com.

The Board of Directors of the Lambda Literary Foundation and Ed Hermance, owner of Giovanni's Room, would like to invite you to our first "Read-a-thon."

The event, to be held at 7:30pm on Saturday November 21, 2009, at Giovanni's Room in Philadelphia, will be a benefit for both the Foundation and the bookstore. LGBT authors will read from a recent or classic book and answer questions for approximately 15 minutes total for each author. 100% of the proceeds from the event will go to the two beneficiaries. We will be serving donated wine and snacks during the marathon reading.

While the foundation and the bookstore can't offset any expenses authors might incur participating in this benefit, we can possibly arrange housing in local homes. Both the Foundation and Giovanni's Room will be very grateful for your help in these trying economic times. While this is a fundraising event, we're hoping it will be a lot of fun for a community of people who treasure our words and writers.

We hope that we've enticed you to participate at this, sure to be wonderful, event. If you would like to read, or have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact Scott Cranin at scranin@tlavideo.com or call 267-765-9840.
