This is a great idea. I read mysteries that are set in many locales so this could be fun.

Based on the list, I think I have personally visited 11 European countries: Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and the Vatican.

My grandparents were all from Poland so I'd like to get there someday.

I will count books from this year on. Most likely, I will have a lot of books set in England. I've never heard of the Faroe Islands so I know I don't have any from there.

Hi linda, it's great to have the Originator Herself on board! Mysteries are probably a good spring board for a challenge like this, I would guess.

Faroe Islands are a small group of island north of the British isles. They are mostly self gouverning but under Danish rule (like Greenland), so if you choose to skip them it's not cheating in my book, at least :)

I have travelled a little bit in Poland and can highly recommend Krakow. A very relaxed, mellow and beautiful city with lots of interesting things to see.

This looks like fun! Thanks for the invite, Linda. Although I am a little worried that now that I've begun this European challenge, I won't find any books set there.

#6 When I signed up for the 50 states challenge, all of a sudden all books were set in Europe. I'm hoping that signing up for this challenge will help me make better progress on the 50 states!

I was just thinking that I feel like I'm going back to school - The president's Challenge for US History and social studies, 50 States and European Challenge are Geography, Classics are English Lit -- does 999 count as the MATH??

At long last, I read a book set in Europe, namely Donna Leon's debut mystery, Death at La Fenice which is set in Venice.

Soon, I'm hoping to get to Jar City set in Iceland and also to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

On reserve at the library is The Saturday Morning Murder by Batya Gur, set in Israel, but that one doesn't count here.

I'm really enjoying An Instance of the Fingerpost, a nice meaty historical mystery, but it's set in England, and I already have a bunch for England. I'm considering making a sort of mini-challenge by century. This one is set in 1664, and the English Civil War is a major plot point.
