What Israeli fiction would you recommend for getting a sense of the country is recent years? I've read some Amos Oz, but I would appreciate any recommendations.

Have you read Etgar Keret? His short stories are a bizarre and somewhat surreal? He also made a film.

I'm seconding torontoc's suggestion of Etgar Keret and would add the following writers as suggestions:

Michal Govrin, Rutu Modan, Shadmi Koren, Ronit Matalon, Yehoshua Kenaz, Sayed Kashua, Eshkol Nevo, Alona Kimhi, Yael Hedaya, Gilad Elbom, Batya Gur, Gail Hareven, Nava Semel, Savyon Liebrecht, Benny Barbash, Shimon Ballas

No idea why some touchstones aren't working.

I just finished reading "Madimba's Jug" about an Israeli mercenary who goes after a treasure of diamonds in Africa.
Hilarious book, I haven't laughed out loud from a book for a long time. A cross between Chipopo and Chasamba (if you are familiar with them).

I don't k now if it's avaiable in English though.
