My brother and I will be taking a road trip in September. We will be in the car between 15 to 18 hours, but are more than willing to finish a book on our own after the trip.

He likes science fiction and fantasy.

I like romance, mystery and adventure (and some fantasy).

Harry Potter and Eragon were two of our more successful listens. The Time Traveler's Wife was not a favorite. Neither of us liked Jasper Fforde.

Does anyone have a recommendation for us? Please help!

Time travel? I loved Jack Finney's books Time and Again, and its sequel From Time to Time on audio. Should work well for both of you as there is a romantic angle, but not heavy enough to turn your brother off.

Another time travel I'd recommend for you: To say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis.

Try Scott Sigler's Contagious or Infected. they are awesome.

You might like The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. It's fantasy/mystery/adventure and very well read by the author. It's only about 7 hours though I think.

Thanks for the recommendations! If you think of other possibilities, please let me know. I'll talk to him about these and see if any take his fancy.

i am a little bit out of my league here but a couple of months ago i listened to, and enjoyed very much, do androids dream of electric sheep? by philip k. dick. i am wondering if a cormac mccarthy book would be good for a road trip. both dick and mccarthy are so dark though.

maybe the arabian nights? i am a sucker for folktales/myths stuff.

For sci fi and fantasy, I just finished listening to Lord Valentine's Castle and really enjoyed that, there's also Elantris by Brandon Sanderson or the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke which are pretty good. Oh! and there's the Temeraire series too by Naomi Novik, dragons in Napoleonic wars, the first one is His Majesty's Dragon.

For mystery I recently listened to a series by Susan Hill about a British detective Simon Serrailler which are pretty good, the first one in that series is The Pure in Heart.

If you like vampires, there's always the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, they're romance, mystery and vampires all rolled into one.

For romance and time travel you can't beat Outlander by Diana Gabaldon! Wonderful stuff, Jamie will make you weak in the knees ;-) lol

katy, thanks for the recommendations. I actually bought Inkheart because it sounded interesting. Unfortunately it is on tape and I've worn out my car tape player. I'll see what I can do about changing it over...

I also suggested to him The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy because I've never read it and I enjoyed the movie. He's read it (years ago) and said he's game. I also think The Graveyard Book sounds good. I may not be able to wait until September to try some of these!

Thanks.

So, this trip was 3 years ago. What did you actually end up listening to?

If either of you like Star Trek and are in the mood for a bit of related humor, John Scalzi's Redshirts is supposed to be lots of fun as an audio book, in part because it's read by Wil Wheaton (who played Wesley Crusher on Next Gen). I have read the book but have not yet heard the audio book, but I've heard great things about the audio version.

Try Moby dick by Herman Melville ...but the book's environment is a little bit cold , so you'll feel like it's winter even if it is 40 degree out side xD
Have a nice trip

It's great to get a reminder of these recommendations. I just put in an order at the library for His Majesty's Dragon.

I'm not sure what we listened to that trip. We listened to Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet one trip. Another time we tried a Christine Feehan vampire book and found it horrible in audio, hilarious, but horrible. Last year we tried a kid's book but it was just too slow. I just can't remember which one we listened to that trip. I'm just finishing The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and am loving it. We had planned to listen to Timeless by Gail Carriger, but neither of us could wait. I listened to it and my brother read the print version. I loved that series.

I'm listening to The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and was thinking it might be good for a trip for someone with similar interests to xorscape.

katylit, Thank you so much for the recommendation on His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire)! It is a wonderful book. We are halfway through the book and should finish it on our return trip back to St. Louis. We both are enjoying it. It is fun, interesting and well read. Simon Vance is the reader and he does a great job. Thank you, thank you. I just wish I'd tried it sooner. Of course, I'll have to listen to the next ones in the series when I get home.

Ooh, a vote for Neverwhere, written and read by Neil Gaiman. He is, I believe, one of the few authors who really does an excellent job reading his own work. I loved that book and I actually looked forward to going to bed so I could listen to him read it (maybe I have told you a little bit too much about myself with that comment). If you both like fantasy, I highly recommend it. The audio version of his The Graveyard Book was also very good, another vote for that.

I'm back from my trip and want to say thank you, thank you for the recommendation on His Majesty's Dragon. We were even able to finish the whole thing, timed perfectly. Now, of course, I'm reading the whole series. There are seven books so far. This book was full of excitement, danger, fun, action, adventure. Interesting premise (dragons were used as the "airforce" during the Napoleonic Wars). And the author uses her setting to explore prejudices in a thoughtful way.

I'll be back to try another recommendation for our spring trip.
