So is there where "essays" would be? Or philosophy?

Dewey seems to have this:
809 Literary history & criticism
809.1 Literary history and criticism of poetry
809.2 Literary history and criticism of drama
809.3 Literary history and criticism of fiction
809.4 Literary history and criticism of essays
809.5 Literary history and criticism of speech
809.6 Literary history and criticism of letters
809.7 Literary history and criticism of satire and humor
Blech.

LoC is probably even less helpful, as it divides out by geography (French Literature, German Literature, etc.) and then has a separate LitCrit category for each, i.e. it doesn't have a top-level category for literary criticism.

Looking under PN - Literature (General), criticism is 80-99 (and the whole 45-1000 range is worth looking at, as I suspect much of what falls under it would fall here), but I don't know how that's further subdivided. Plus there's lots of theory-ish stuff spread out through the category which would probably fall here:
PN 1-6790 Literature (General)
45-57 Theory. Philosophy. Esthetics
59-72 Study and teaching
80-99 Criticism
101-245 Authorship
172-239 Technique. Literary composition, etc.
241-241.5 Translating as a literary pursuit
441-1009.5 Literary history
1010-1525 Poetry.
1031-1049 Theory, philosophy, relations, etc..
1065-1085 Relations to, and treatment of,. special subjects.
1110-1279 History and criticism.
3311-3503 Prose. Prose fiction.
3329-3352 Philosophy, theory, etc..
3355-3383 Technique. Authorship .
Also blech.

I suppose, if we're going to classify literary criticism based on what work(s) the criticism is on, we can just have as the secondary level those top-level categories in OSC which could loosely be grouped under "Literature," and have as a tertiary level those secondary levels which are decided upon for those top-level categories, and so on.

So the top level categories for Literary Criticism would be:
x. Literary Criticism of FICTION
x. Literary Criticism of POETRY
x. Literary Criticism of AUTOBIOGRAPHY & BIOGRAPHY
x. Literary Criticism of GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
And if, over in the FICTION thread, they decide they want the following secondary level for FICTION:
x. Mystery
x. Science Fiction
x. Romance
Then the tertiary categories under "Literary Criticism of FICTION" would look like this:
x. Literary Criticism of FICTION
x. Literary Criticism of Mysteries
     x. Literary Criticism of Science Fiction
     x. Literary Criticism of Romance

Literary criticism bleeds over into literary theory (New criticism, structuralism and all that kind of stuff).

There are also people who write guides to books, and this sometimes bleeds into bibliographical works.

I agree with your blechs, but literary criticism broken down by genre seems particularly granular. Is there a solution? Not sure...
