Favorite Wrightson Stories

Since it looks like Berni Wrightson might be a general shared favorite-what are your favorite Wrightson stories and standalone works?

I admit, I have a weird list -I like him best when he worked with a brush:

"The Gourmet" from "Plop", and "Feed It" from "Web of Horror"
As far as standalone works, I like the stuff in The Monster Coloring Book.

They are all impressive, but one of my fav's would be "The Muck Monster" from Warren's Creepy Magazine #68. 1975

That's a good one -that might be his last really great strip, IMO.
I kind of like that Spiderman book he did though...

I agree his Warren stuff was probably his best, but I also really liked "The Task" from The Mutants" book (I'm not sure where it appeared originally)

I also have a soft spot for the first Capt. Stern story, from Heavy Metal magazine, if I remember right.

Bernie Wrightson's (and Len Wein) Swamp Thing #1 is ranked # 75 in Jerry Weist's 100 greatest comic books (2004).. Interesting book and comic lists..

There was a Wrightson interview (you can probably find it on youtube) where he said (at the time) it was like he had an opaque projector in his head and he'd just trace what he saw on the paper.
Even if that was only somewhat true...for a certain period of time...it's still unbelievable.

I spoke to Mr. Wrightson back in 02 about his tenure on the Frankenstein illos.. He developed a form of arthritis in his hands that causes him pain from time to time (watch him hold a pen or pencil when he signs.. also he has not done convention sketches for many many years now).. also he was starting to see object in detailed black and white.. such as clouds and trees.. it was really affecting him for a time. Such an amazing artist.

I had heard about the arthritis, although I seem to remember him also attributing the difficulties he was having to an allergic reaction to the nickel in a type of pen he was using, but are you saying that he was going color blind as well?!

He was mentally kind of loosing it.. He was working so long and hard on those 48 or so plates (not to mention those plates that were rejected by Marvel that he spent so much time on) It took him over six years to complete...and it started to affect him.... Send me your email address and I will send you photos of the interview (taken at his studio) .. no.. not so much color blind, but just his mind reacting to the stresses and limitations of his ability to draw.

just FYI... I just added and uploaded many Comics with Wrightson covers.. many classics from the Bronze Age. Check them out on Wrightson's author page or my library....

I met him at the first Wondercon and he said that Frankenstein "took his eyes" and he could never see as well again. Still, he's a great guy.

I just had the library buy the Wrightson collection of stories from Creepy and Eerie.
"Jennifer" is still great. I heard it was going to be made into a movie or tv episode.
