Hello everyone!

I'm looking for a recommendation for a basic introduction to the Edo/Tokugawa Period. I'm particularly interested in common history and general way of life more than I am in wars and dates, etc. Of course, major events tend to be important, too.

Thanks so much!

Everyday Life in Traditional Japan, a classic. Focuses on the cultural, social side of the Edo period. Slim and accessible but very informative, it's probably the best introduction available.

That's exactly along the lines of what I'm looking for, thanks!

I just did an independant study on the Tokugawa-Meiji perod

History of Japan vol. 3 by George Sansom is good, it covers the Tokugawa SHogunate
Tokugawa Religion: The Values of Pre-Industrial Japan By: Robert N. Bellah (its only 197 pages)

the rest of my stuff is mostly Meiji based but i cna give you that if you want
