This month I started off with my book club book, The Things They Carried, which was a memorable read, though really difficult at times. I recently read The Handmaid and the Carpenter (it was a quick read-took less than a day) and liked it. I'm also in the middle of The People of the Book and liking it so far. It's one I need to read for a while and then come back to. I've read some others by Geraldine Brooks and really love her writing style.

So whatcha been reading lately?

The Flying Scotsman: The Eric Liddell Story by Sally Magnusson. I've only just begun this one, but he was such a great man that any story about him has to be great too.

I have been reading Brisingr for ages. I am finally nearing the end. The first of the series was my favorite by far, now I think I'm reading just hoping to relive the enjoyment of the first book.

Next up for me to start is The Jumping-Off Place by Marian McNeely, which is my Early Reviewer book from the October batch.

I'm looking forward to the release of Halo: The Cole Protocol. I NEVER actually purchase books minus books that I must absolutely own... this being one. I love using the library too much (and I'm poor). My fiance and I are into the Halo book series (based off the video game trilogy for the Xbox). Hopefully it will be the highlight of our reading next month, because it is actually a book we both want to read!

So I have finished both Brisingr and The Jumping-Off Place! Lately I've been trying to read everything in the stack of a dozen or so books from the library. Right now I'm on The Treasures of Weatherby.

I'm reading Hot, Flat and Crowded. This is one sobering book.

I teach and am now on Christmas break, of course, so I've read The Shamer's War, Nicholas in Trouble, The Titan's Curse, The Jesus Storybook Bible, Coraline, and The Eyre Affair this week. Oh how I love break!

I'm reading Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain and it's absolutely wonderful and, if I finish it in the next couple of days, will be on my top 10 reads for 2008 list. If I don't, it will be on my top 10 reads for 2009 list!

I know someone else who read that recently, Lyzzy, and they really loved it too. I'm not a huge fan of history in general -- would a non-history-lover be able to enjoy it?

I'm not big on reading history books - I like those longitude and cod type ones but I don't remember the last time I read any straight history. It's accessible and it explains all the stuff I vaguely remember but didn't have a context for in the 1970s and 80s particularly. It also gives a context for the present credit crunch and describes previous slumps, which is obviously reassuring!

He divides each large section into smaller sections and includes stuff on popular culture etc. This makes it both easy to read in little bursts... and easy to read "just one more section" till you've been at it for an hour!

I'd recommend it to everyone.

I have searched high and low for a book titled Triumph and tragedy: A history of Abebe Bikila and his marathon career about marathon runner Abebe Bikila written by his daughter Tsige Abebe and I have finally found a copy. This I will sit down with and finish in a night. : )

Ooh sounds interesting!

It's -3.5 in Birmingham at the moment. But that's for a different thread...

I've been doing a lot of rereading lately. I just finished rereading the first two Last Apprentice books by Joseph Delaney and Twilight. Now I'm rereading Goblet of Fire. New stuff just doesn't sound interesting this week for some reason.

And yes -- I am a total kid at heart and love children's/YA fiction.

From friends' recommendations, I picked up Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians, which I found quite amusing. Again, children's fiction. There is a sequel, which I plan to read after I've done a bit more rereading. Back to Goblet of Fire!
