So Compski has also finished the book, so I'm gonna go ahead and start this thread since Foggi can't discuss the book with me. I'll have more stuff later when I'm not in the middle of the movie watch, but how early did you figure out that Brom was Eragon's father?

I thought it in the first book, but then it was shot down in the second. I this book I didn't think anything was up until Saphira said "Tell him and put him out of his misery."

Kind of a backwards Star Wars thing. "No Vader wasn't your father, it was Obi Wan."

So, in chat you were talking about your theory on who Eragon's mother was, but I thought she was dead already. What makes you think she is still alive and is either Angela or the woman that Eragon blessed?

I am staring this thread so I remember not to open it until I'm done. Bad me, bad me. Maybe it will be incentive to finish.

3: Espy, I think it may be the woman Eragon blessed because she wouldn't tell him her name. If it is not his mother, it is one really big red herring (or white peacock;). Angela also seems fishy to me because she was supposedly once among the elves.

You know someone probably swore an oath in the ancient language not to reveal that his mother is alive! I already complained to Espy about this being Paolini's easy out to explain things: Why didn't you tell me he was my father? I swore in the ancient language. Why didn't you tell me about the Heart of Hearts? I swore in the ancient language!

Yeah, I really got tired of the swearing-in-the-ancient-language excuse by the end of Brisingr. It feels to me like he tried to retcon a bunch of stuff that he hadn't thought about in his first book. I'm starting to wonder if the reason he split it into three books is because he added this whole thing about Brom and Eragon. Maybe I'm just not giving him enough credit.

I did think that the handling of the Roran sections in this book were done better. It didn't feel like a chore to read them, and they flowed better with the rest of the book. It felt more like a connected narrative than disjointed frame stories thrown together for the heck of it. At least, that's how I felt about Eldest. But that's my opinion, and I don't have a problem with anyone disagreeing with me.

ETA: I think that Angela has a big part to play before the end of the series because Paolini has kept bringing her into things. I couldn't see any reason to let slip the "had a different name" thing other than he's got something planned for her in the last book. But this, like the fortune-telling scene may just have been red herrings.

I liked the Roran scenes here much better, also. Before I felt they were taking away from the story, but with all the pointless stuff of WB and DG it felt like Roran was the story.

So, did you not see the death of the mentors coming as soon as they said they would go fight?

By the way, is Shade pronounced shah-day or just like window shade? I keep liking the first one, especially when they call him Shadeslayer.

The second that the mentors gave Eragon the dragon's soul, I knew they were going to die. Just one of those common rules in epics.

I've been pronouncing it Shade as in window shade, but I'm not the best person to look to when trying to pronounce written words. I mispronounced genre for year before realizing that the G sounded like a J.

I haven't read it and don't plan to - Eldest was enough for me. But I wanted to hear what you all had to say. I liked the title of the thread!

I'm bumping this back to the top since some people (You know who you are! |( ) have said they finished the book or are on the cusp of doing so.

I FINISHED IT!!!!

The last quarter of the book was great. Why did it take so long to get good? I feel like I read a 200 page book in 700 pages. Perhaps some of the fluff will turn out to be important in book 4.

The small tidbits about Angela in this book make me wonder what big thing is coming for her. I wouldn't like it if she turned out to be Eragon's mother since she is portrayed as a not-quite-rival to Arya for Eragon's attention, sort of.

#2 Compski, "no, Vader wasn't your father...." lol, great comparison!

I agree that the swearing in the ancient language stuff got old. I also was wondering whether it was making up for poor planning.

Roran's sections were better, though after the scene of Katrina helping him get dressed for battle I was starting to think he was a goner. Maybe next book.

#7/8 re: death to mentors -- yes, as soon as they said they'd fight. It is just how it goes. The mentor passes the torch. The sense of loss and grief were well done.

I've always said Shade like window shade, compski. I'm relatively confident that is the normal pronunciation, but not positive now that you mention it. ;)

In the beginning of the book when the spell brisingr was being cast left and right, I was annoyed, like we were being beaten over the head with what the word meant. But when the title of the book was revealed to be the name of the sword, I was appeased. I like Fire as the name of the sword.

The relationships and character development felt more natural in this book than in Eldest. What I loved about Eragon was the relationships and seeing the characters become different people. They were all so stagnant in Eldest. At least in Brisingr the characters regained their individuality.

I'm reading it and enjoying it completely

I finished it at 1:30 this morning. Close enough to finishing it by the end of January.

My thoughts:
I'm really disappointed in this book. I liked the 1st two much better. I thought that it was supposed to be a trilogy, and now it's a cycle. It seemed that this book could have been cut down quite a bit. I had a hard time reading this one. Does that mean I won't read the next one? No. I'll read it. It better be more interesting than this one.

Brom as a daddy. I had a suspicion. It seems that all of my theories came true in Eldest, so I wasn't really suprised.

I figured his first spell would play a big part. It is the one he refers to when in need. I think it will play a big part in the taking down of the Empire.

Roran's character felt a little more developed. I liked those chapters.

I'm not to sure how I liked the chapters-that-were-from-Saphira's-viewpoint. Hyphens were getting a little annoying. I really think that her thought process would be a little more sophisticated.

I completely agree with the title of this thread, now that I have finished the book.

Congrats on finishing, Kirby!

Good point about Saphira. I didn't like the hyphens either. Her thoughts felt far more animal than I thought they should have.
