I think this is a fairly important question, all things considered. I fell for ST hard with the original series, and I own almost all the books, but in the last couple of years my collection of TNG books has been steadily growing. ;) I don't own books from any of the other series, and haven't really seen any of the episodes, either. How about y'all?

Trekkie Love ;)

lokakuu 2, 2008, 7:47am

TNG - definitely. The first Star Trek book I read was Spock's World, but most of my Trek love (television, books, games) goes to TNG.

lokakuu 2, 2008, 8:43am

TNG and DS9 are close in competition for me, especially once we really start learning about the Klingon culture. (Oh and the whole dominion war thing.) Though Voyager is close second.

Never cared for TOS, and Enterprise couldn't hold my attention.

lokakuu 2, 2008, 9:36am

My favorites are The Next Generation and The Original Series. I liked DS9 and Voyager, but they never really hooked me like the first two. I haven't seen any episodes of Enterprise although I have fond memories of Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap :-)

I received a recommendation for the ST animated series on Amazon and thought it looked pretty interesting. I haven't seen any of those either. I think I might have to check those out as well.

lokakuu 2, 2008, 10:59am

The Rihannsu Series!

Oh - wait. There were TV series too? :P

lokakuu 2, 2008, 9:09pm

This old lady is loyal to TOS. By today's standards, the effects are cheesy and the message subtle as an anvil on the toe - but, oh my, what a wonderful world opened for me when it all began. And I love the novels I have collected, nearly all 80+ from Original. One to beam up.

lokakuu 2, 2008, 11:52pm

Wow -- I wish I could get my hands on some TOS original novels. I had a couple that were lost during my many college year moves.
An old friend of mine has a ton of them, but unfortunately because his significant other turns her nose up at them, he has them packed away in boxes and paper grocery bags.

But I have enjoyed the DS9 novels, and despite the fact that this may get me voted off the island, I honestly did like the Enterprise series. I've picked up a few of the Enterprise novels, but haven't read them yet because of my "not read" backlog.

If you have any source of used books (Goodwill/thrift stores/charity shops, rummage sales/flea markets, library sales, used book stores, anything like that) then original series Star Trek books aren't really *that* hard to find, at least in everywhere in the US I've been. You have to pick 'em up a few at a time as they come (and the real old one - pre-Pocket-Books - are a little harder) but you should get a fair-sized collection pretty quick and pretty cheap. They're also fast reads so they shouldn't do too much harm to your "to read" list...

(Or, y'know, you could offer to give your friend's collection a good home.)

I watched a bit of "Enterprise" and actually liked it better than a lot of later DS9 and Voyager - it seems pretty well put-together, but - it contradicts the books out the wazoo, and yes, I totally put the books over the shows. (Not that it doesn't also contradict the show. Much like the later movies.) And it doesn't share that fundamentally optimistic theme that TOS and TNG (and the first few seasons of DS9 and VOY) had which is so Star Trek to me.

lokakuu 3, 2008, 12:39pm

Optimism. That's it. ST always said, "Yeah, we've got our problems, but we'll make it. Humankind survives."

lokakuu 3, 2008, 2:06pm

I don't know...I mean, obviously TOS can be corny, but having read really a rather obscene amount of books about this crew I just feel like I know them so well...besides, I feel like the books rounds out some of the characters that the series didn't really get to explore. And some of them are just...amazing. How Much For Just the Planet? anyone? ;)

As for TNG, having almost every book from TOS (I'm actually going to have to Amazon those last 2-3, because I simply can't find them) I decided to give a book named Q-Squared a try...and it simply won my heart, lol...

lokakuu 20, 2008, 1:08pm

I love the TNG show, but for me, "Star Trek" has always been the TOS Pocket Books.

Muokkaaja: joulukuu 15, 2008, 6:39pm

My favorite ST series was Enterprise followed closely by, for sentimental reasons, TOS. My favorite ST characters were always Vulcans so I appreciated the Vulcan background history of the Enterprise series. I also read alot of the ST books for that reason.

tammikuu 13, 2009, 4:23pm

My second favorite ST series of books is TNG but my very favorite books are the Starfleet Corps of Engineers series. I suppose it's the mechanic/technician in me. I repair and restore clocks for a living.

helmikuu 10, 2009, 3:37pm

My Favs are TNG and Voy. but I also love Peter David's New Frontier Series...and a lot of the shorter series within series books are very good expecially the crossover ones like Dominion War and Double Helix.

huhtikuu 20, 2009, 2:20pm

I'm really digging the new Titan book series.

elokuu 16, 2009, 2:57pm

My favorites are definately TOS and the post-series DS9 novels.

elokuu 28, 2009, 12:38am

I'm with 'gilroy' (message 3) with TNG & DS9 being close favourites of mine and Voyager as follow up.
I think DS9 has the edge for me.

Yes and agree also about TOS and Enterprise. This refers to the TV series as I'm only just about to delve into some of the books - 'to boldly go'!

Muokkaaja: toukokuu 16, 2011, 11:55am

The new Typhon Pact series is really grabbing my attention I like how it is shedding light on how the Breen Confedracy works.

toukokuu 17, 2011, 2:25pm

OMG! It's so terribly disjointed, though! I'm almost finished with the last book. I suppose any new crossover series is bound to disappoint after Destiny, but still. The Spock/Sisko book was the absolute worst. The Titan book didn't really get far and the DS9 books was ok. This last one - the TNG book is ok. And what do they have to do with each other? Nothing! They're not tied in at all other than each of the "nemesis" of the books is a member of the Typhon Pact. Otherwise, we know no more about the Typhon Pact after the series than we did before it started - really disappointing.

syyskuu 21, 2011, 3:28pm

TOS all the way. I remember when there was only one Star Trek at all.

My favorite books are Diane Duane's TOS books and just about anything with McCoy. Doctor's Orders makes me very, very happy (McCoy is left in command after bitching at Kirk one too many times. It's *supposed* to be a simple survey mission, and Kirk wants to see the planet. Then Kirk disappears . . . then the Klingons show up . . . then someone who wants to kill all of them shows up . . . and McCoy is very annoyed.)

joulukuu 1, 2011, 10:52am

I would have to say my favorite series was DS9.

tammikuu 8, 2012, 10:57pm

I would have to say that I go back and forth between TOS and DS9 ( a combination i did not see elsewhere), however, Data if probably my favorite character.

tammikuu 9, 2012, 10:21am

I like Quark, Bashir, Dax, and Picard.

tammikuu 29, 2012, 9:47am

I am all about the TOS. There's something more powerful and pure in them, and that might just be because, growing up in the 80's, a local tv station would play nothing but TOS every Saturday night from 11p to 6 am. I'd stay up every time, soaking up those episodes, and then I'd go and spend every bit of money I had on buying up as many TOS books as I could. Anything with Kirk or Spock would probably rank as my top reads; Best Destiny is probably my favourite book. Though, I do particularly love the Rihannsu series (sorry if my spelling is off).

tammikuu 29, 2012, 2:13pm

Have I really not answered this? Um ... maybe because I have a hard time picking. Raised on TOS, so it's a fav for that. But I'm too close to DS9 to exclude it and I really enjoy Enterprise. Those three I will watch over and over again, no matter what episode is on I will stop flipping to watch.

toukokuu 19, 2012, 3:42pm

I'm going with TOS I still like TNG But when I'm on the Trekbbs I hang out in the TOS forum more often and as a friend of mine put it (Except exchange McCoy for Spock) I am the (2nd) unofficial bride of McCoy
Live long and prosper.

lokakuu 25, 2012, 7:31pm

I love how many years this topic is spanning -- I mean, just here on LT, let alone in ST :-)

I watched TOS from, well, the pre-season commercials (I still remember the design graphics). And, of course, I loved it . . . so much so that, when I broke some family rule (at age 13 or so), the punishment wasn't grounding; it was "you may not watch this week's episode of Star Trek" (ghod, that was rough!).

And then, I pretty much missed TNG while it was airing originally, and DS9, and somehow "found" VOY accidentally in, like, Season 4, and got totally hooked back into the ST universe. ...started buying TNG DVDs, got totally confused by watching DS9 reruns out of order, then came to totally appreciate it via DVD. Watched ENT straight through as it aired.

So, well, I can't choose . . . and . . . why choose?!? They're all good.

Re the novels: I have many, am still making my way through them . . . some are really good, all are fun.

And, what do you all think about "Star Trek" (2009)? You won't be surprised to hear that I loved it.

lokakuu 26, 2012, 10:55pm

Eh.... can't say I loved Star Trek 2009. I mean, I get what they were doing, what they were going for, but... sometimes while trying to get all sorts of 'new' people into something a company/brand can totally screw over the people who made that brand what it is... that's what I felt the Trek people did here.

Just my opinion...

lokakuu 29, 2012, 2:50pm

I always preferred TOS, especially the movies (I loved the refit Enterprise) and wasn't a huge fan of TNG, but I seem to read TNG the most. To me, it seems better in print than on screen.

I liked 2009, it was exciting, but I'd have preferred new characters to updated PC versions of the original. And I don't forgive them for destroying Vulcan and killing Kirk's Dad.

lokakuu 29, 2012, 3:35pm

I liked the new movie. What I like best is that the "new universe" can give us fresh takes on the characters we love, but most of all, that they've "loosened the strings" so to speak on the writers of the "old universe". The stories they've been turning out from the Destiny series onward have been great!

lokakuu 29, 2012, 4:33pm

The 2009 movie was super dumb, but I greatly enjoyed it. I like the way they were able to spin it off from the original continuity such that both can continue existing side-by-side.

lokakuu 29, 2012, 7:32pm

Guess I'm also sad that this means that we'll never get another movie with my favorite characters played by some of my favorite actors and actresses in it. Ah well, that's what Fanfic is for I guess.... (and the tie ins if I ever get to them. I think I'm almost caught up to the Typhon Pact, but haven't read those books). Destiny series was okay, 'cept that one of my favorite characters was axed... *sigh* Too many books to read, and they churn out the ST ones wayyy to fast compared to all the other authors I read...

marraskuu 2, 2012, 11:17am

I loved the Destiny stories. They Typhon Pact, so far, has disappointed me a little, but maybe I'm jaded because I didn't think it held up like the Destiny series did. Thypon Pact just seems more scattered. I have trouble connecting them all to the overall story.

helmikuu 5, 2014, 2:08am

TOS. I have most of the books. the latter books seem to be repeats of older ones a

helmikuu 27, 2016, 9:21pm

The Original will always have a special place in my heart at the first & childhood fav. After that comes DS9 & The Next Gen.

toukokuu 8, 2016, 3:15pm

TOS and DS9 for me.

toukokuu 9, 2016, 11:36pm

TOS for me. I'm a sentimentalist.

toukokuu 10, 2016, 5:22pm

TOS and DS9 for me, followed by TNG and Enterprise, then somewhere very very very far behind that, Voyager, which I found to be completely unwatchable after a while. I started watching TOS in '66 and started collecting the novels in the '70s. It's really impossible to keep up with them all. The 2009 movie was at best OK and I was mostly grateful because it could easily have been so much worse. I'll still go to the latest sequel when it comes out this summer. I don't know what to expect from the new series, but since it will only be available on a streaming service, I probably won't even get to see it.

toukokuu 10, 2016, 6:34pm

I was excited for this new series, and then they pulled the switch and said 'CBS All Access only'. At least if they put it on something like Netflix I'd consider joining (since they still haven't put Daredevil or Jessica Jones on DVD yet, grr..) but, from what I've heard CBS All Access sucks... a lot...
