Having just finished Antarctica which is another of KSR's fine near future SF books that does extremely well at describing the mental and physical picture of being out in the open, I was wondering if there were any other writers who do as well? - pretty much any genre.
Bagley does a bit sometimes, snow tiger or landslide but not to the same degree as KSR. Any other suggestions?

Rannulph Fiennes's Mind Over Matter ticks all the boxes and it's hard to beat Bill Murray (Undiscovered Scotland etc) for gritty realism on the Scottish hills. I'm off to walk Wainwright's coast to Coast route, wish me luck!

This is months late, so I don't know if you're still interested. Some of the Nevada Barr series have some great outdoors writing. The main character works for the National Park Service, as did Barr. I read these to find out about the parks as much as the story. The last one was set in Michigan's UP at Isle Royale, and was maybe the best yet.

Re Nevada Barr: So do I, though at times they get a bit dark. My favorite is Firestorm. I want to visit each national park she has written about. I have seen Mesa Verde but none of the others.
