Happy June, everyone! What are you reading this month? I've begun book #6 in Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series, The Betrayal of the Blood Lily. Please share your June reads below!

I just started Just one damn thing after another. Don't think it applies to any of the challenges I participate in, so I am on the hunt for a good wall story:-)

For my bookclub, I'm reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, translated by Lucia Graves. At 486 pages, this is a very long book for me.

I'm reading A Fate Worse Than Dragons by John Moore. So far it's just OK, but at least it will work for this month's SFFKIT!

I finished listening to It Can't Happen Here (by Sinclair Lewis; narrated by Grover Gardner) and will probably start Brideshead Revisited (by Evelyn Waugh; narrated by Jeremy Irons) early next week.

It's time for me to wrap up The Sun Also Rises (by Ernest Hemingway) as well. Hopefully, I'll get it finished over the weekend. I haven't decided which book to tackle next: Mirror of Our Sorrows (Les Enfants du Désastre #3; by Pierre Lemaitre), Master and Commander (Aubrey/Maturin #1; by Patrick O'Brian) or, Christine (by Stephen King). I'll let my mood dictate when the time comes :-)

Currently I am reading Soul Catcher by Michael C. White, a historical fiction story about tracking and capturing runaway slaves in the 1850s. I am also reading Storm in the Village by Miss Read and it's lovely to be visiting the village of Fairacre once again.

My kindle book is The Picasso Scam by Stuart Pawson and my paper book is I Captured the Castle by Dodie Smith. I also have The Mistress of Nothing by Kate Pullinger for next month's book club, but I'll wait to start this until closer to the meeting.

Just finished Secondhand spirits and Emerald blaze, both mediocre reads for different reasons, so glad I got them from the library.
Going back to Spinning silver by Naomi Novik, which got abandoned for the new shiny library haul.

I started reading The Children of Llyr by Evangeline Walton, part of her re-telling of the Four Branches of The Mabinogion. I've read several different translations of this book? myth? and hers by far is the best one. She has a gift of bringing the storyline out of a repetitive, scholarly cycle into dialogue, action, explanation for actions, all of the things that we look for in the 20th/21st century.

My goal is to complete the series this month, having started with Prince of Annwyn back in April, and then decide if I want to keep it or not. The random acts of cruelty in "Children" are so well told that I am just put off from the cycle itself.

Currently finishing Christmas, Cabernet, and Chaos which is hilariously funny although contains just about every middle school favorite item (think bodily functions, bad jokes, and rivalries, animal carcasses, bad food, you name it).

I also finished Her Only Wish for NetGalley.

It's a long weekend here (Juneteenth) and it's the perfect time to wrap up all the loose ends I've had going this month:
The Sun Also Rises (by Ernest Hemingway) - I know, I know. I keep saying I'm going to finish, but this time I mean it!
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (by Douglas Adams) - If I put it in my bag and peck at it while I'm waiting in the car or whatever, pretty sure this will be finished today/tomorrow
Brideshead Revisited (by Evelyn Waugh; narrated by Jeremy Irons) - less than an hour to go; but I never want it to end! So meta, so good :-)

I've got Mirror of Our Sorrows (Les Enfants du Désastre #3; by Pierre Lemaitre) on deck; and I'm queuing up A Frozen Hell: The Russo-Finnish Winter War of 1939-1940 (by William R. Trotter; narrated by Matthew Lloyd Davies)

Sooo, I still haven't finished The Sun Also Rises (by Ernest Hemingway); but that didn't stop me from starting Means of Ascent (The Years of Lyndon Johnson #2; by Robert A. Caro; narrated by Grover Gardner) and; pulling Master and Commander (Aubrey/Maturin #1; by Patrick O'Brian) from the stacks!

kesäkuu 22, 2023, 8:44 am

Finally finished The Sun Also Rises (by Ernest Hemingway)! My records indicate that I read this eight years ago; but I didn’t remember a thing. I think if I read it again, I’ll pick up a print copy. The OCR Scan done for the ebook edition I read wasn’t very good— some of the “r”s became “i”s and; all the words that were supposed to be italicized were preceded and followed by underscores instead of actually being italicized. Annoyingly distracting.

Have started Master and Commander (Aubrey/Maturin #1; by Patrick O'Brian) in earnest and; am in the middle of Means of Ascent (The Years of Lyndon Johnson #2; by Robert A. Caro; narrated by Grover Gardner)

I've started Mistress of Nothing by Kate Pullinger which is our book club book in July. Also An Unequal Defense by Chad Zunker for my "Z" book for the AlphaKit. And I'm still listening to the Andrea Camilleri series on audio.

I am reading Emma of 83rd Street which is supposed to be a contemporary variation of Jane Austen's Emma. So far it is fairly boring. I hope it picks up soon.
